Mr. and Mrs. Ivison Tamblyn and Mr. and Mrs. Everett Brown motored to Toronto on Thursday, Dec. 12, to see the very beautiful "Living Christmas Tree" at the People's Church. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Staples and Mrs. Gladys Greenwood attended the retirement party held in Grandview school for Mr. Art Rowan, a member of the school board for .33 years! May we add our personal congratulations! congratulations! An early Christmas family gathering was held at the home of Mrs. E. L. Gilbank and those in attendance were Mrs. Clarence Trigg, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Mr. and Mrs. Alan McAlpine and family, Belleville, Belleville, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Webb and family, Markham, Mr. and Mrs. William Gilbank and boys, and Mr. and Mrs. David Gilbank, all from Pontypool. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey and boys, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kimmett and family, Lindsay, were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. D. Bailey and Mrs. E. Billings. Mr. Arnold Mostert was home from Guelph University on the weekend and was with his parents, Mr, and Mrs. Cor. Mostert. - . Mr. and Mrs. Ross Taylor, Scarborough, were last Sunday visitors of Mr. and' Mrs. Charles Taylor. Mrs. Everett Stapleton, John Robinson, Orono, and Mrs. Mary Morris, Strathaven Bowmanville, were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Stapleton and family, Oshawa. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stapleton, Mrs. E. L. Gilbank and Mrs. Everett Stapleton all attended the Newcastle Senior Citizens' dinner last Thursday evening, where the "Yorkshire "Yorkshire Lad" entertained the group. Mrs. Janette Beckett and daughter Tamara, were Monday luncheon guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor. A very commendable method of bridging the "generation gap", has been found at Bowmanville Senior Public School! One of the newer electives is adopting a "Senior Citizen" in the rest homes and visiting them on a regular basis. Two young gentlemen were visiting our father, Harvey Aiken in Strathaven last week and this must surely be an enjoyable experience for many of the residents. Far too many elderly of our nursing homes are left friendless and a visit from these young folks must be looked forward to! Congratulations Mr. McArthur, the teacher of these two young fellows. Senior Citizen's Christmas Party An excellent attendance was at the annual meeting and Christmas pot luck dinner held Thursday, Dec. 5, in the Orono IltLO.F. Hall. A delicious dinner was most enjoyable and also our Christmas gift exchange. The afternoon was spent playing cards and the following following were winners - High lady - Myrtle Wood, High gent - Edith Taylor (playing as a man), Low lady - Stella Carson, Low gent - Doris Wannan (playing as a man). St. Saviour's Churcn mews Sunday was White Gift Sunday and the gifts were placed at the chancel. We thank members of St. Saviour's Church school students and staff for preparing preparing the Chancel drama Sunday. 1986 Offering Envelopes are available in the church. If you have not done so already, please pick up yours real soon! 1986 calendars (church) are available from an A.C.W. member. A must for every Anglican home, and a good gift for your friends. We are happy to be pa'rt of the "Admission to the Office of Server." - Natalie Anderson and Michael Tomlinson. Please try to lend a hand to decorate the church this Thursday at 10 a.m. A party complete with Santa Claus followed the Sunday morning service for the children and parents, and was much enjoyed by everyone present. Orono United Church News Members of the choir led in the singing of Christmas carols prior to the regular morning service. The Sacrament of Communion Communion was celebrated and many carols were sung by the congregation. The church looks very attractive with pretty lights, decorations and Christmas poinsettias. Members of the C.G.I.T. and Hi C are busy preparing for the Christmas Eve service and this will be a very meaningful service. Our calendar for Christmas services - Sunday, Dec. 22 at 11:15 a.m.; Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 7:00 p.m. (Leskard U.C.W. Christmas Eve service); Tuesday, Dec. 24 at 9:00 p.m. in Orono Church Hi C and C.G.I.T. joint services. Missions and Service - On Christmas Sunday and also Christmas Eve, envelopes will be available for your special gift to Missionary and Service fund, which enables our church to help others both at home and abroad to know Christ and to overcome poverty and famine. Choir Christmas Party Members and spouses of Orono United Church Choir held their party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hooper, on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Following a delicious dinner of casseroles, everyone enjoyed enjoyed gathering around the piano to sing Christmas Carols and also practising our music for church. A happy surprise for the evening was the two beautiful birthday cakes, made by Joyce and Eleanor for Stella Carson and Joyce Gray's birthdays. ' Happy birthdays a bit late, ladies. We were pleased to have Rev. and Mrs. Milnes and Cathy as our guests for the evening. U.C.W. News An excellent attendance of around 40 folks attended the annual U.C.W. Christmas party and pot luck dinner, held Wednesday, Dec. 11 in Leskard Church hall. We were glad to welcome many visitors and to have Rev. Milnes lead in carol singing. The delicious dinner had a fine array of casseroles, breads and desserts to tempt the hungry ! Elva Grant- led the devotional portion of the meeting and plans were finalized for our Christmas Eve services, Dec. 24, at 7 p.m. in our church hall. General U.C.W. Party This was held in the main hall of Orono United Church on Thursday, Dec. 12, with a splendid pot luck dinner. The tables looked most festive ' with Christmas table cloths, serviettes and candle-light and Marion led in singing Grace. Following dinner the president, Donna Scott, read a poem and several carols were \ sung. Lorna Atkins gave the secretary's report and Doreen Wood gave the treasurer's reports. Mrs. Betty Chatterton gave the "In Memorium" and moments silence in memory of those departed. Ruth Grady and members of unit no. 4 gave the Christmas devotions and we sang more carols with Joyce Gray at the piano. A delightful surprise for our past president, Donna Scott, when she was presented with her life membership in U.C.W. The ladies of unit no. 3 catered to a full course turkey dinner last Tuesday night in the main hall to the ladies of Heather Rebekah Lodge. More News Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Werry and family spent the past weekend visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ralph,Corrigan and family at Cookstown. The 1st Girl Guides spent Monday evening carolling at the Durham Senior Citizens' Complex and visited many residents. Gifts of homemade cookies were given out and over 18 dozen cookies were distributed. Last Tuesday, Dec. 10, a bus load of pupils and parents from Orono Public School travelled to Toronto to view the "Living Christmas Tree" at the "People's Church." All reported the sight to be very memorable and our thanks to our school librarian, Mrs. Clifford for organizing this happy event. Congratulations "to the artistic artists of Clarke High School for the very eye- appealing stained glass panels at the Orono Post Office. These are members of Mrs. Amy Hoad's (Morton) art class. Isabelle Challice EBENEZER U.C.W. Ebenezer U.C.W. met on Dec. 10,1985 at 9:30 a.m. with 32 ladies, Pastor Mark Elliott and four children braving the snowy weather. We were put in the festive mood with the C. E. Hall beautifully decorated with Christmas very much in evidence. Our ladies were treated to a delicious brunch of home made goodies by Mrs. Helen Herron, Mrs. Marjorie Worden and Mrs. Maureen Elliott. A group of contented people listened as President Mrs. Charlotte Hughes welcomed everyone and also gave a reading "Three Wishes for You at Christmas and the New Year." Secretary, Mrs. Kay Mackie read the past minutes and correspondence. Mrs. Greta Down read the treasurer's report in the absence of Mrs. Joan Down who has gone to Calgary to be with her daughter Patti, Alvin and to help with her new wee grandson Ryan Peter. Mrs. Sadie Courtice read our "Mission Minute" telling of a program at Saint Colomba House in Montreal called "School Lunch Kits" serving n I ! Iav 11 : / V- *» SB. On Monday, Dec. 9th, the Goodyear Retirees met in the St. John's Hall for their annual Christmas dinner, which was served by the Martha grpup of St. John's Church. The dinner was of the usual high standard, and many favourable comments were heard from those partaking of it. About 65 members were present, and at this meeting Les Smale was accepted as an honorary member, as a tribute for his continuous efforts on behalf of the senior citizens. By his readiness to help any movement for the "older statesman and women" of our community, Les has earned the respect of us all, and we are glad to welcome him to our organization. Norm Allison was the Chairman of the meeting, with the President Wilbur Blackburn also taking part. With speechmaking kept to a minimum, the dinner was a great success, and much enjoyed.by all. hot lunches to the children and how it was the only hot meal that many receive in a day. Charlotte announced the executive meeting to be held on January 14, following the ladies morning Bible Study and also our next meeting to be pot luck on January 21 at 12:30 p.m., 1986. Pastor Mark Elliott conducted conducted the installation of officers using as his theme, Phillipians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened! strengthened! me." Offering and the "Least Coin" were taken and dedicated. Mark and Maureen Elliott sang a carol "Poor Men and Humble" with Mark playing his guitar. Mrs. Ruth Harris led us in a very meaningful candle lighting Christmas devotional. Miss Grace Trull read Luke 2:8-14 and also reminisced of her trip to the Holy Land at Christmas time and told of seeing the shepherds, being in Bethlehem and singing carols. As Mrs. Ruth Harris led, Mrs. Doreen Metcalf, Mrs. Mildred Muir, Mrs. Maureen Elliott, Mrs. Helen Herron and Mrs. Greta Down gave readings as each lit one of the five candles representing "Christ the Light of the World", "For the Children", "For Those in Need", "For Those Who are Without Hope", and "For God's Ministering Ministering Servants." These readings were interspersed with carols and prayers. Maureen Elliott, Greta Down, Joan Coverly and Lois Osborne sang "There's a Song In the Air" accompanied by Eileen Down at the piano. Before singing "Good King Wenceslas" Mrs. Ruth Harris gave the very interesting story behind the carol and I'm sure it will now mean more to us each time we sing it. We then sang "Silent Night" and Ruth closed in prayer. A special thank you to'Mrs. Maureen Elliott, Mrs. Helen Herron and Mrs. Ruth Harris for another delightful meeting. The Ebenezer Sunday School performance of "Psalty's Christmas Calamity" Calamity" was enjoyed by everyone. everyone.
