6 The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville, December 18,1985 Section Two W averley Public School News Christmas at Waverley by Jason Moore The halls in our school may not be "Decked with Boughs of Holly", but they are decorated with paper snowflakes, Christmas paintings and other winter art work. Every year a large Christmas tree is placed outside of the office. Classes from Waverley create their own decorations to put on the tree. Our school may be silent at night but the days are filled with the hustle and bustle of the teachers and students getting ready for the Christmas concert. Plays, choral reading and Christmas tunes can be heard from the gym and classrooms as you walk through the halls. Primary and Junior choirs are busy rehearsing Christmas songs for the concert. Some primary classes are writing letters to Santa Claus, hoping that their wishes come true. The students wish you a very Merry Christmas! Strathaven by Laura Broadbent On December 10 the junior choir went to Strathaven Nursing Home. Mrs. Moffat conducted the choir while Mr. Metcalf played the piano. The girls dressed in blue skirts and white blouses and the boys wore blue pants and white shirts. The choir walked up on a small stage and then sang the following songs: Say Hello To Christmas, If You Like Christmas, Little Angel and Christmas Is A Feeling. The choir got the audience to clap their hands, tap their feet and sing along with several songs. They also sang Christmas carols. The Senior Citizens faces lit up as they sang. When the choir was finished singing they shook hands and said Merry Christmas. Just before the choir left, Strathaven presented the choir with two boxes of chocolates. Primary Crafts by Kelly Conley Mrs. Ough and Mrs. tenWesteneind have organized a Primary Craft Club. The grade ones have made Santa Claus masks out of felt and nylon stockings, Rudolf paper bag puppets and reindeer made with candy canes and pipe cleaners. They will make a i gingerbread house using graham crackers and other little things. The Grade 2 and 3 craft club will begin in the new year. Mrs. VanSeggelen's Class by Jennifer Moser There is a big commotion in Mrs. VanSeggelen's class and it is a Hairy Grandmother! This hairy grandmother is a major character in the big book the class made. The book is like an ordinary book but it is very big and the pictures are cut and paste. Some of the art around the room has to do with David's grandmother. The class based the book on a book by Robert Munsch called David's Father. For Physical Education they are doing parachute play for movement activities and they are also acting out stories. Their gym time is on Monday and Wednesday. In the hall they have art pictures to do with the recent Santa Claus Parade. For Environmental Studies they are talking about animals hibernating, migrating and looking for food. In Math they are learning greater than and less than (with Pac-Man) and counting to 100. In Spelling they are adding suffixes to words. This is a very busy class. Trash Pick-up Revised for Holiday Season Newcastle Council has approved a revised garbage pick-up schedule for the Christmas holiday period and the Public Works Department Department will be placing advertisements in local newspapers to inform the public of the changes. Residential pick-up will be suspended from December December 25th to January 1st inclusive, with full service resuming on January 2nd. Those who would have had pick-up on January 1st will have their garbage collected collected on January 2nd instead. instead. Downtown commercial garbage will be collected as usual on Mondays. In a report to the general purpose and administration administration committee Director of Public Works Ron Dupuis favoured the above schedule: "It eliminates costly overtime, allows sanitation workers to have a regular Christmas holiday, holiday, and normal pick-up routes will be maintained!"
