I Newtonville Population Grows by One The Canadian Statesman. Bowmanville. June 15.1988 11 Memorial Hospital Nurses Mark 3 9th Reun ion Newtonville News by Peggy Mulian er day. Yes, everything checked out "Miracle on the Hill." It was Sunday, June 5th. We sat outside on this morning, morning, doing what we often did, enjoying the lovely country view of the north. The Cows, the horses and the sunshine over on the Brown's hill. But - this time something was different; there was a horse down. We scampered for the old binoculars, hoping hoping nothing was wrong. Within moments half a dozen dozen people gathered about the horse. Well, in less than 15 minutes, minutes, right before our eyes, it happened, the birth of a colt. With a slight tug on his spindly hind legs, there he was - and he was gorgeous. Soon mother was up, nurturing nurturing her newborn. Within the hour, the young colt shakily rose to his feet, looking looking somewhat like Bambi. A precious, beautiful scene. (Wish I could have bottled the moment, then later on, take it to the city to share with the many, many kids who will likely never see such a dear sight.) We had the very distinct pleasure, of meeting and chatting with happy couple, Ross and Ina Brown the oth- _■ was perfect, and marvelously with the vet. Mare, Shipka Tyme "Ty" and sire "Striking Sun" are the parents, and very well. Congratulations to long time Newtonville residents, Ross and Ina Brown on their latest young lad. As we know, during this past Environmental Week, ending June 5th, many commendable commendable educational and clean up activities were on the go, organized by the "Citizens for a Safe Environment." Environment." Without exception, the preschoolers at Newtonvilles Newtonvilles Play Place were learning learning the knack of picking up garbage and putting it in its place. Moms and tots of New- tonville's Play Place, along with Orono's group had a super day trip out to the Exotic Exotic Cat World in Orono, last Wednesday. The trip was grand. Moms sent many thanks to the people out at Cat World for their generous group admission on education, education, and all enjoyed the day immensely in this terrific, "Spic 'n Span" place for kids. Play Place has closed for the summer months, but welcomes all new moms and their young children to join in the Wednesday morning gatherings in September. I was speaking with a young man I know who has taken drugs steadily for 16 years. He has taken, I would say, just about every drug, every way possible. Now he is going through a different kind of hell. He is trying to get clean, to stop taking drugs. His dream - to eventually help other kids who get hooked, be able to get through to them of the real damage they do to the body and brain. This person looks many years older than he is. Sometimes Sometimes he speaks intelligently; another time with tones of violence, then his words become become sad, depressed and suicidal. suicidal. Drugs do not have boundaries. boundaries. We must not think drug usage or addiction could never happen to someone t we know of love. No media outlét can say too much against the use of drugs. The matter is life and death. Hoorahs! to town residents residents who continue to work on their properties by cutting, raking, and flowering flowering regularly. It is a shame isn't it though, that there are still a couple of places in particular that are continually left in a mess. To add insult to injury it invariably is the same couple of spots that also have three or four barking dogs - all nightlong, eight to ten 'half-baked' cars for sale and who knows what else. Let's hope that sooner or later later these people will get the hint, bend over ana start picking it up. Letter to The Editor Dear Mr. Editor: We have lived in Bowmanville Bowmanville some twelve years now and it is with affection that we call this place home. Living in a smal town brings with it many pleasures and blessings. However, "small mindedness" mindedness" is one of the more blinding disadvantages of rural life and it definitely showed itself in your Bits and Pieces column of this past week. Your are obviously not impressed with our new Town Square and perhaps rightly so - personally I prefer prefer grass to concrete too. But don Y t you think that criticizing criticizing a tree's ancestry is "digging" a little deep! To be honest with you, I'm not sure who has suffered suffered the greatest affront - the poor tree for coming from the wrong side of the ocean, the cenotaph for having having it's feeling hurt or the intelligence intelligence of your faithful readers, j Sincerely, Jennifer Walkout (Mrs.) 1 Ï, /P.S. p'n A more serioiis note, LCnd it' very disturbing when I see an attitude that refuses to allow old wounds to heal. That's how : wars start and make the building of cenotaphs sadly necessary. necessary. Squirts Tigers On Tuesday, June 7th the Shoppers Drug Mart Tigers were on the field against Orono. The team once again carried their "positive win " attitude with them throughout throughout the game to give them a 9-0 win. The whole team played excellent positional soccer with some good pass- ing plays. Craig Sabine had a very strong game, scoring four goals. John van de Grootev- heen and Joel Osborne each scored twice while Andy Griffin completed the scoring scoring with a fine goal in the final final minutes of play. Some strong play by Tyler Tyler McDonald and Stephanie McAleese kept the play moving moving and in the opposition's end. Ben Hardy also did a Y good job as he kept digging and kicking at the ball, keeping keeping it from Orono's reach. Keep up the good work,Tigers.
