Each member of the head table stated what she would be listening for if given given the opportunity to attend a meeting of Toastmasters in Moscow. Table Topics Master Joan Winter said that she would be hoping for enthusiasm and growth. Toastmaster of the evening Nellie Vanveldhuizen would be hoping to hear Soviet Toastmasters using freedom of speech, even if the content went against tradition. General General Evaluator Nancy Barnes would be looking for lines of communication that bind the world, human unity on a planetary basis. Grammarian Marilyn Dow's word for the evening was "rigmarole", meaning a long-winded harangue of little little meaning or importance. Rigmarole is something we in Toastmasters seek studiously studiously to avoid. The meeting of February 7 succeeded admirably admirably in that task, remaining remaining within the two hour desirable time limit. Table Topics, that portion of the meeting which involves involves impromptu speaking, was kept to a simple but effective effective format. Each speaker used the last word of the previous speaker to develop a one-minute theme ana continue a story. New Toastmasters Toastmasters Pat Pingle and Florence Florence Armitage, and guest Maureen McLeod succeeded admirably in their task. The Toastmasters portion of the evening involved two speakers. Toastmaster Walter Walter Piersma asked us to think of ourselves as a group of farmers as he spoke to us on employer/employee relations, relations, demonstrating his speech objective of organization. organization. Toastmaster Norm Broderick delivered a nostal gic speech on chilc ,l -ood fun on the farm-sleigh-riding, maple syrup making, toffee pulling, fishing, and the like, while varying the volume, volume, pitch, rate of speed, and quality of his voice. Both speakers emerged as winners of the Best Speaker Trophy. General Evaluator Nancy Barnes performed admirably admirably in her portion of the meeting. She had prepared a guideline which allowed her to mention specific strengths and weaknesses while avoiding avoiding the rigmarole which has previously caused this part of the meeting to drag. Toastmaster Wanda Phillips emerged as Best Evaluator. The Spark Plug award went to Toastmaster Joan Winter and Toastmaster Irene Kon- zelmann was judged to have delivered the best Table Topics. Don't forget the Canada Day Speech Contest which is open to all aged 17 or older. older. The theme of the 5 to 7 minute speech is 'The Wonders Wonders of Canada.' Bowmanville Bowmanville Toastmasters meet at 7:30 p.m. SHARP at the Lions Lions Centre on Beech St., Bowmanville, on Tuesday nights.
