The first victory was against a good Port Perry team on Wednesday January 17th Ryan Jackman opened the scoring early in the game with a good shot into the corner of the Port Perry goal after receiving an excellent pass from Niki Defreitas and Stephen Tabb. Ryan Dunnigan put the home team up two goals with a lovely snort handed goal. Port Perry narrowed the lead to one with a goal in the second period. Brent Stockman knocked in a pass from Jason Maclean in the third period to again put the Dutchman up by two. Port Perry again came back and narrowed the lead with another another goal. Ryan Dunnigan scored his second to once again give the Dutchman a two goal lead. However, Port Perry was not going to give up and came right back and scored another to keep the game close. The Dutchman then settled down and played a strong defensive game to hold off Port Perry. Brent Stockman put the game away for the Dutchman with a long shot into the open net. John Marco played a strong game in goal. The second playoff match was against Cobourg on Sunday evening. The borne team was no match for the Dutchmen who really came out flying and defeated the visitors by a score of 7 to 2. Jason Maclean led the scoring scoring with two goals, Ryan Dunnigan and Brent Stock- man each had one goal and two assists, Aaron Pudlis and Derek Hall each scored a goal and an assist, Niki Defreitas provided a single Jackman, Trevor Baker, Chris Paquette, and Mark McCarthy, Mike Leipsig and Chris Baumhauer played a strong game on defense. The Flying Dutchman also hosted an Oshawa Little Little NHL team on Saturday, January 20 at Darlington Arena. The Bruins had previously previously beaten the Dutchmen Dutchmen by a of 6 to 1 and that loss was still fresh in their minds. The visitors opened the scoring in the first period. period. The Dutchmen were held off the scoreboard until the second period when Brent Stockman scored after receiving receiving a pass from Jason Maclean. Ryan Jackman put the home team in the lead with a nice goal after receiving receiving a pass from Niki Defreitas Defreitas and Chris Baumhauer. Jason Maclean increased the Dutchman's lead late in third period with a goal assisted assisted by Ryan Dunnigan and Brent Stockman. John Marco played a very good game (he usually does) and came up with some pretty big saves when they were needed. The team is starting to gel and should do well in their upcoming tournament in Niagara Falls USA as well as their playoffs, if they continue to play solid two way hockey. Adam & Eve Wins On Saturday, January 20th, Adam & Eve defeated Bonded Paving 6 to 2. Early in the first period Adam & Eve's John Galbraith opened the scoring on a nice pass from Adam Baraball. Adam & Eve wasn't able to get on the board again until late in the first when Adam Baraball Baraball popped one in on a pass from Matthew Stout. In the, second period, John Galbraith hit the mesh again on a pass from Matthew Matthew Stout. Adam & Eve's line of David Clark, Mark Beitle and Derek Banner- man pounded Bonded's net with shots but Bonded's goalie Robbie Austin came up with some good saves. Daniel McDonald got hold of the puck and rushed in and nailed one home, again late in the second. Daniel McDonald scored on a pass from Adam Baraball. Adam & Eve's defence of Chris Shields, Jason Knox, Adam Baraball, and Mat thew Stout did a great job of moving the puck around. The third period saw some good two-way hockey. Bonded got on the board mid-way through the period on a goal by Joel Tymchuck. Bonded put in another fast one by David Harnum from Jamie Austin. With a minute minute left in the game, Daniel McDonald accepted a pass from Matthew Stout, rushed in and put one over the shoulder of Robbie Austin. Keeping Bonded's scoring down to 2 was Matthew Akey playing between the pipes for Adam & Eve. Special Special mention to Adam Powell, Powell, Jason Charbonneau, Mark Collucci, and Kris Constantine for their hard work in the comers and along the boards. The Bowmanville Men's Basketball League has been in operation for over 50 years. On Saturday, January January 13, the league held a tournament that was won by Team Maroon. John is a doctor himself, and although he didn't introduce basketball basketball to Bowmanville, he has been the president ' of -the men's league for the (past 21 years. The six-team league operates operates at the Bowmnville High School on Tuesday nights, beginning in September and finishing in May. The league's youngest player is 19, while the oldest is 50. John became aware of the league's existence as a senior senior at Bowmanville High School. It provides players with one of the few opportunities opportunities to continue basketball when they complete college or university. John has • played a dual role, being an executive member and player since 1968. J f, The league,,plays a 28 ghrrlb' regular season schedule, schedule, and a three game preseason preseason exhibition. During the exhibition games, the players are evaluated by six designated captains, and the executive. Players are divided divided equally, and the captains' names are thrown into a hat and drawn randomly for team assignment. One of the difficult jobs in making up the league, is trying trying to keep an equal balance of shiftworkers on each team. Each squad usually has a minimum of three to four players on opposite shifts, on each roster. In the past 20 years, the league ; ,has.i,i(j?d6rg.one some major changes,' 'it. ,no longer has sponsorships ' for' each team and they adopted the three-point line last year. In the early 70's they hired LOSSA referees to do the games. Hiring referees was a necessity as players carried carried grudges from week to week, and sometimes fights would break out during the heat of the battle. To close out the season, the league offers a full- slate of activities for the players. The day starts with 18 holes of golf at the Newcastle Newcastle Golf Course,'followed'by a lob ball tournamént in the afternoon. The awards dinner dinner follows in the evening. Atom hockey team sponsored by J&J Sharpening have run into some hard luck in the three tournaments they've entered this year, it's certainly certainly not the case in the regular scheduled games. Holding top place in their division, division, they were able to strengthen their position with another win on Saturday, Saturday, January 20th. This time the team sponsored by the Ontario Hydro Employee's Employee's Union fell victim to J&J's aggressive offense and consistent defense. The versatile Nick Zdrav- kovski, who has played every every position on the team, appears appears to have settled in net for J&J. Supplying some pretty impressive saves early early in the game while his team mates notched two goals at the opposite end of the rink, Nick played with n confidence that is shared by the whole team. Greg Mns- terson scored his first goal with hard earned assists going going to Colin Galinski and Jacob Jacob Gorski. A minute later, Darren Crawford doublet! the J&J score by placing the puck high in the Hydro net. Assists went to Stephen Wraith and Brian Ball, However, to tho credit of the Ontario Hydro Employee Employee Union players, they worked hard to break the J&J shutout midway through tho opening period. By tho end of this period, Jacob Jacob Gorski added another goal to tho J&J side of tho scoreboard by "ono-timing" n pass from Grog Masterson in tho corner. Jamie Powell's hard work in this play led to an assist for him as well, Well done Jamie! Period two continued in the same fast pace with end- to-end hockey that was soon in the first. Greg Masterson again started tho scoring. Ibis time his impressive skating and stick handling abilities led to on unassisted goal which gave his team a three goal lend. Tho Ontario Hydro Union , Atoms responded responded witli their second goal to narrow that lead only to see it regained when J&J defensemen. Brad Johnston notched his goal, Score nt the end of two periods periods wasC-2 for J&J. Two more goals wore ndd- ed to J&J's tally enrly in the third period while tho Hydro forwards wore held from farther farther scoring. Phil Giislni- lak's unassisted goal came at the 2 minute mark while Chris Oyler netted his goal a few minutes later. Assists to Chris' goal went to Brad MacMaster and Brad Johnston. Johnston. Final game score settled settled at 7-2 for J&J. Congratulations, Congratulations, players. Once again your solid team work and positional play has led to another success.
