Holds Meeting Wesleyville News On Monday morning, January 8, Welcome UCW' met at the church at 11 a.m. Called to order by Phyllis' Symons, reports were heard concerning activities at home ana in World Outreach. Outreach. Help was sent to the Thos. Crosby mission boat on the West coast, our native native people, help to other parts of the world as well as organizations in Toronto, and locally. Letters of appreciation appreciation were received from all of them as well as from recipients of Christmas baskets baskets sent to members of the congregation. After the business business for 1989 was completed ; Phyllis vacated the chair in which position she has ; served so well for two years . and the president for 1990 Mary Kellogg took charge. Some of the activities on the schedule for the coming year are, catering for a wedding wedding in February, Presbyte- • rial annual at Cobourg on , January 31st, UCW conference conference in Campbellford in April 4 and 5, church cleaning cleaning bee in April, choir dinner dinner in March, special June meeting with guests, bus trip in the fall and bazaar in November. A card party is planned for February 14th. There will be other activities which come with the months including arranging church coffee hours, refreshments following summer services and all those special needs which arise in the work of a busy church congregation. Then, two modern ladies Reta Baker and Ruth Connelly held conversation conversation similar to those of long ago. Phyllis Symons was in Cuernavaca, just south of Mexico City last May with an international group to visit a school there supported supported by volunteers. One ugly part of the place was an open sewer which carried the town's waste. An effort is being made to cover it. It was a happy holiday. • Donald and Andrea Nichols Nichols left on Friday January 12th on the first part of their trip and will be going to Vienna first. There have been very unhappy unhappy things happening on the lakesnore . this past week. Slippery roads caused two of them, a car skidded at Wesleyville and crashed into a fence breaking some posts, the other was more serious near Port Hope causing causing injury. Another wasn't caused by slippery roads and the reason tor it seems beyond understanding. Mail boxes were vandalized, not once but twice in the same week, shortly after the same thing happened on a concession concession farther north. Not so many years ago pi- leated woodpeckers were considered extinct in Hope township but of recent years they are seen occasionally. Harold Bests have several different birds at their feeder feeder but have the pleasure of having two pileated woodpeckers woodpeckers visit their trees. Peter has suffered recurring illness illness for sometime, and at each time of recovery faced life with fortitude and good spirit. He has left his family a legacy of courage. At about 8:40 a.m. a woman was walking to her office on the second floor of the building at the corner of Wentworth and Cedar when a man appeared, carrying a gun. He pointed it at her and then grabbed her by the hair and forced her towards the stairwell. She struggled with him but he eventually got her there and handcuffed handcuffed her to the railing. He also taped her eyes with grey electrical tape. He then forcibly took the bags she was carrying. He waited for a few minutes minutes and grabbed another woman who was also walking walking towards the same office. He handcuffed her and taped her eyes and took her bags which he then put into a black garbage bag. He walked out .the back door. He is described as being medium height, wearing a navy blue snow suit, dark boots and a dark balaclava. Stolen was personal property property and a substantial amount of money.
