After eliminating the Cobourg Cobourg Cougars in six games, the Eagles had a decision to make. Because they finished in first place during the regular regular season, the Eagles were given an option of playing in the semi-finals, or taking a bye and facing the winner of thé Port Perry-Uxbridge series series in the finals. A bye, which will give the Eagles a minimum two week holiday, suited them just fine. "We had four or five guys who got hurt during the Cobourg Cobourg series, so we wanted the two weeks off so they could heal," explained Coach Brian Taylor prior to a practice practice on Sunday night. - "Besides, Port Perry and Uxbridge hate each other. So we felt that the winner (of their series) may not be the same team coming out as they were going in." The Eagles are staying sharp in the meantime, as General Manager Ron Clemens Clemens has been busy claiming claiming any free ice that's available. available. "I picked up some extra ice on Tuesdays, so now we're on the ice three nights a week. That should be enough to keep them (the players) sharp." Sharp is something the Eagles weren't during the middle stages of their series against Cobourg. After jumping out to a 3-0 series lead, and outscoring the Cougars 31-12 in those ames (11-7, 10-3, 10-2) the "agios suffered a letdown allowed the Cougars to steal games four and five. "Nobody played us better Potbellies Down Hockin, 8-3 by Bob Sheridan Behind the solid stand-up goaltending of Ron Acheson, the Potbellies offence was more than we could handle on Friday night. We lost 8-3. Grant Childerhouse and Barry Johnson were top scorers with two goals apiece. Singles were contributed contributed by Andy Akoy, Norm Lnvallee, Ron Jones and Wayne Robbins. George Sainsbury opened the scoring for us with a bullet bullet drive from the slot and then set up Hugh German for a pretty goal. Hugh scored again with assists to Bob Deblois and Sicgi Rohr. Our next game is this coming coming Friday at 8:00 p.m. against the Osliawa Antiques. Antiques. I an all. year than Cobourg did in those two games," said Brian. "In those first three games when we scored double double digits we figured the series series was going to be a blowout blowout and the guys got a little cocky." "In both those games we outshot them (55-29, 51-23) and still got beat. Their goalie stoned us." He added that the Cobourg Cobourg wins were the result of their better play, rather than poor play by the Eagles.:1'";/ Eagles.: 1 '";/ ;V. " , In game six of the series, the Eagles were trailing 4-2 entering the third period, but rained to score four unanswered unanswered goals to advance. "We changed our system a little bit for that final game," offered defenceman Larry Perris. "They came back and slowed things down on us. I mentioned to the coaches that we needed to make a change in our zone, and it turned out to work for us." The change was to set a ick in their own end on the Irst Cobourg attacker, enabling enabling the defence to move the puck out of their end more quickly. The adjustment adjustment took away from the strong forechecking of the Cougars, and helped the Eagles Eagles with their own attack. As for a preference between between meeting Port Perry or Uxbridge, thé feeling seems to favour a Port Perry series. series. "I'd like to play Port Perry, but I think we would match up better against Uxbridge," Uxbridge," said Brian. "We finished finished playing them about a month and a half into the season, and when I saw i them the other night, (against Port Perry in game one of the series) they had a lot of.different players." Based on their record during the regular season, a series against Uxbridge would seem to be the easier of the two. During the regular regular season, the Eagles beat them five times, while suffering suffering just one loss. Against Port Perry, the Eagles held the edge by a slim margin winning three times, losing twice, and, playing to a draw in the other contest. "I'd ' ' father play Port Perry, because I think we can handle them," said Larry. Larry. "We don't get as many penalties against them because because they're not a bunch of goons." Using the term 'goons' to describe any other team in the league would produce an argument. A quick look at the statistics snows that the Eagles led the league with 1,682 minutes. Over 200 minutes more than second place Uxbridge. Not playing it rough' is something Brian fears if Port Perry should happen to advance. "Port Perry doesn't hit and we don't either when we play them. Hitting is a part of our game, and they seem to be able to lull us to sleep." Another factor could be a mental one. "We seem to have a mental mental block when we go up there to play. Their building has been like a graveyard for us." It's a good bet that if Port Perry advances, the Engles will have a gravestone of their own prepared with the Mojncks' name on it.
