The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 7,1990 11 Rotarians Taken on Tour of Germany by Lorna Miller The Bowmanville Rotary Club meeting was a lively one last Thursday. Rotarian Bob Worth thanked everyone who showed up for the Easter Seal Stuffing Party and fined those who didn't. The Rotarians stuffed over 1600 envelopes for this worthy cause at Trinity United Church on February 28th. Sam Cureatz, who was globe-trotting recently, brought back some good news about the Russian re lease of the Baltic States from under its oppressive' ■wing and a bottle of Russian Pepsi. Sam says that it is not "the real thing." Happy anniversary to Irv and Marilou Gill and George and Kay Vice. Merrill Brown introduced the guest speaker, Steffen Buchnolz, the exchange student student from Verden, Germany. Steffen will be returning to his homeland in August. Last Thursday, he showed the club some slides of modern-day Germany and it is impressive the strides they have made at rebuilding rebuilding after the war. The slides show modern high-rises cheek-by-jowl with centuries-old buildings. Many cathedrals and castles still dominate the landscape along the rivers and forest edges as they have for centuries centuries -- Teutonic monuments to German history. "I've enjoyed making new friends," Steffen said of his stay in Bowmanville, and he seemed a bit sad when he mentioned his return this fall to Germany. Germany is a Hilly country country and especially around Verden, resembles our northern landscape. The shopping areas in the urban centres such as Berlin and Hambourg are very modern. The old shop fronts lend an atmosphere of antiquity to the areas, but outlined against the sky, are the glass-and-brick skyscrapers skyscrapers of post-war construction. construction. In many towns, the shopping areas are closed to traffic, turning entire entire streets into promenades lined with flowers and open air cafes for the tourists and natives alike to enjoy. Tourists also flock to the Oberammergau Passion Play which is enacted at Easter time. Steffen ventured some thoughts on his homeland during the slide presentation presentation which included slides of the president and several political powers. He does not think that it would be a good idea to reunify Germany. Germany. "I know that it is going to happen, but 1 don't like it." As he points out the black eagle, rampant on a field of gold that is the national emblem emblem of West Germany, and the black red and gold flag of the country, he could be foreseeing the end of West Germany as identity as it merges once again with the communistic East German country. "There is going to be a lot of change," he says. "The West German economy is built upon the car industry, industry, and there may be a recession recession in the West until there is an adjustment to the arrival of the East Germans Germans who are pouring across the borders in the thousands." ■For Steffen and his generation, generation, the idea of a reunified reunified Germany poses some questions that they would rather not face. Still, it is a prosperous and growing country to which he will return after his stay with the Purdy, Strike, and Brown families of Bowmanville and the Cli- menhage family of Orono. Steffen was thanked for his slide presentation by Dr. Keith Billett. The Bowmanville Rotary club received the Basil Tippet Tippet Attendance Award for attendance in December. This is the third time in a row that this club has been so honoured. Congratulations, Congratulations, guys. President Pat Mothersill closed the meeting with his usual thought for the day which had something to do with memory letting you forget forget the things you forgot to do.
