Chairman TM Joe Christl led us in building the meeting meeting around the Toastmasters Toastmasters International Theme of "Catch the Spirit." The spirit that TM Christl wished the club to catch was the spirit of leadership and communication. communication. With the idea of communicating communicating to a wider audience than is normally present at a Toastmaster meeting, the club proceeded with the filming of portions of this regular Toastmaster meeting. meeting. As a means of informing the general public about Toastmasters, it is hoped that the resulting film may be shown in various venues. Toastmasters is reaching out to the community in the spirit of leadership and communication. communication. In addition to our regular membership, our meeting was enhanced by the pres ence of three guests. Guests are always welcome and may visit as frequently as they wish. During the course of the evening, one of the guests, Judy Yen, became became the newest member of Bowmanville Toastmasters. Welcome, Judy! The growing maturity of this club is reflected in the number of speeches that are being delivered from advanced, advanced, rather than the basic basic manual. Speaking from an Advanced Manual, TM Nellie Van VeldHuisen presented presented a demonstration talk entitled "Oh, What a Heavenly Heavenly Sound" as she showed an explained the functioning of her clarinet. TM Pat Pin- gle entertained with a tongue-in-cheek explanation of "How to Speak in Public Without Being Nervous" - also an Advanced Manual project. Another reflection of the growing maturity of Bow- manville Toastmasters is found in the increasingly more helpful and analytical evaluations that Toastmasters Toastmasters are making of one another's another's performances. Evaluations, Evaluations, properly conducted, should be designated to rec ognize the strengths of the speaker's performance and to suggest areas for improvement. improvement. In a recent edition of "The Toastmaster," Charles Dickson, Ph. D., gives suggestions suggestions for expressing ones opinion in an article entitled "Dish It Out Diplomatically." Diplomatically." His suggestions might well be adopted by all critics. critics. At times we all feel the ned to criticize family members, members, friends or business associates. associates. Consider the following following ways of offering constructive criticism: - Voice your opinion calmly calmly and as soon as possible. It is more natural than waiting waiting a long time and will probably be accepted better. - Make only one complaint complaint at a time. Don't overload overload and possibly devastate the person with a list of gripes. - Don't repeat a point once you have made it. If you mention the same criti-, cism several times you may lose the person's respect and weaken you own position. - Object only to actions the other person can change. If you ask the person to do something he is unable to do, frustration builds in your relationship. - Make criticism in the form of suggestions or questions, questions, if possible. Almost anything can be said in a positive way, including negative negative remarks. This keeps the other person more open to you. - Avoid sarcasm, it signals signals anger. Your contempt may cause resentment. - Avoid words like "always" "always" and "never". While some things may be everlasting, everlasting, many are not. Such exaggerations usually rob you of accuracy and place you in a weak position. - Don't apologize for your confrontation. This will only detract from your critcism and may indicate you are in conflict about whether you had the right to say what you did. - Don't forget to compliment compliment others. Then when you do criticize, people will be more likely to accept it. After all our evaluations were completed, Bowmanville Bowmanville Toastmasters had selected selected TM Pat Pingle as the evening's Best Speaker, for the prepared speech, and doubled the honour by awarding her the trophy for the best impromptu speaker, TM Norm Broderick earned Best Evaluator, and TM Irene Konzelmann received the coveted Spark Plug for providing the stimulus for the business meeting.
