Robert Kaplan, MP for York-Centre, will be the guest speaker when the Durham Federal Liberal Association Association elects delegates on Thursday, ' April 26 to the Liberal Leadership Conven-. tion, President Frances Jones said today. Mr. Kaplan Kaplan will talk about party unity and the responsibility of choosing the next leader of the Liberal Party. The meeting will be held at the Bowmanville Recreation Complex at 8 p.m. . The choice of 12 delegates from Durham riding to the Leadership Convention in Calgary in June is expected to be vigorously contested. Supporters of Tom Wappel presented approximately 140 applications for membership membership on the last day new memberships were accepted. Since then, Liberals holding memberships that lapsed in 1989 continue to renew their memberships, as they are entitled to do up until the beginning of the meeting on April 26 to elect delegates. A brief summary of Mr. Kaplan's address follows: "What I am looking for this time is the ingredient that has been missing for five years, real Party unity. Bringing the Party together must be a demonstrated skill of our next Leader. I am not waiting for a candi date to offer me an exciting new vision of my country or to demonstrate charismatic power. My vote will go to the candidate who shows the most commitment to strengthening the Party, and tne most respect for the other candidates and for the E rocess of choosing our eader. There are great concerns concerns about the state of national national unity in Canada and about our desire as a nation to build a common future, to continue to do great things together. It is not just tne Party but the country that is at stake, arid that is the measure of the importance of our choice of tne next Leader of the Liberal Party.
