It brought to a halt a modest, one-game winning streak the Onoles were riding riding as the result of their 7-6 triumph over the Ajax Juveniles Juveniles the previous night. The turning point in this contest was a four run uprising uprising by Newmarket in the seventh inning. With one out and a runner runner on second, reliever Nick Dennis was pulled for hard throwing right hander Chris Smith to try and close the door. Unfortunately, Newmarket Newmarket wouldn't let Smith get his hands on the handle. The first four batters Smith faced managed to collect collect what could be deemed as cheap hits, and eventually eventually came around to score. They added a two run home run to centre field off of Smith in the eighth inning for insurance. "As I said before (earlier in the season), I'm not worried worried about the losses," said Oriole coach Kel Bamsey following following the game. "The pitching pitching wasn't what I would have expected tonight, but all of that doesn't matter." "We're playing for the play-offs," he continued. All that was missing was a big red bow. Courtice and Orono squared off in their second head-to-head battle in three nights, and the end result of this game was no different than the previous one. A mishandled free kick late in the ' second half by Orono goaltender Adam Carter resulted in an empty net goal for Courtice that broke a 2-2 tie. The goal stood up to be the winner. Courtice also scored their first goal following a free kick, and their second goal came as the result of a penalty penalty kick. Hence the .early Christmas Christmas celebrations. Two nights earlier, Courtice Courtice dominated on their home field, handing Orono a 4-1 loss. "Monday night was more of a nothing-can-go-wrong night for us." That's how Courtice goalkeeper John Chiodi began to explain the contrast in the two games. "Every team seems to get one of those games during the course of the season where everything will go 100% perfect." "I think Monday's game was still in our minds, and we came in here tonight a little over-confident." The game was a see-saw battle for the first half, as both teams found the back of the net once. In the second half, Orono dominated play early and a Pete Willems goal them the lead. Enter Courtice goalie John Chiodi. The Courtice keeper came to the forefront for his team, stopping four point- blank shots after Orono had taken a. 2-1 lead. Easily his best save of the night was a toe save he made on a 10- foot blast off the foot of Derek Derek Zolman. The stop left many of the Orono strikers shaking their heads in disbelief. disbelief. The play of Chiodi seemed to inspire his tëam- mates, and after knotting the score on a penalty kick, they pressed tne Orono defence defence until they scored the eventual game winner. "We seemed to sink into a defensive shell late in the game," explained Orono's Pete Willems, who is a teachers' assistant at Bowmanville Bowmanville High School. "It was tough to come back after after they scored on a penalty kick (Courtice's second goal). We just sank back after that. And their third goal was just a favourable bounce that went their way." "On Monday night they beat us to the ball, but we beat them tonight. For the majority." Orono opened the scoring early in the game, as Mike ast two games. "I just got the end of my foot on tne ball and it curled in just over the line." John Carney tied the score on a penalty kick, and Mike Carney scored the winner winner into an empty net after the ball bounced out of the hands of the Orono keeper., With each win, Courtice seems to be getting stronger as they begin to build for the playoffs. They have been knocked out in the semifinals semifinals for the last three years in a row. "' "It was a good game for us tonight. So far this season, season, getting all the guys back has been a problem," said goaltender Chiodi. "We've got a lot off shift workers, and some of the guys are just getting into the swing of things after getting getting back from school."
