I SPORT TH by Brad The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, August 8,1990 11 Sun Shines on Annual Regatta in Caesarea Standing along the third base side at a Junior Junior baseball game last /Thursday night, a question question was posed about the / number of fans in atten- / dance. There were four of us - the "fence leaning critic crew" you might say - taking up our regular spots for the game. The "crew" consisted of a couple of fans, a father of one of the players, and myself. Understandably we are all very proud of the fact that we haven't made a bad call yet. Our record is perfect. As we took a look around the park we noticed noticed that the four of us made up about half of the crowd in attendance. The only other people in the park were a couple of the players' girlfriends. And even some of them left before before the end of the game. I posed the question to the rest of the "crew" as to why there wasn't anyone anyone else in the stands. Surely these guys have parents, so why aren't they here I wondered aloud. "I'll show ya why they don't come to the park," said the parent member of the "crew". A couple of errors later I hadn't received an answer answer and began to get inpatient. inpatient. I began babbling about some possible reasons reasons for the lack of fans. Some of my reasons were that there are numerous ball games on TV, it's always always cool at the ballpark, and there's no french fry truck for fans to get a feed. That's why nobody nobody will come to the park and watch these kids," said the parent. One of the Bowmanville Bowmanville players had been called out on strikes, and promptly yelled "the word". He followed it up by saying it again. And then, just to make sure everyone everyone heard him, said "the word" once more before taking a seat on the bench. As usual, "the word" spread like a tire fire through the rest of the dugout. Some players . took turns using it to explain explain their version of the call. 1 The parent needed only five minutes before one of the players provided provided the answer to my question. And many more examples were provided by the players before the game ended. Now before I get letter from another anonymous reader/det me say that it . isn't all of the players on the team who are guilty. Baseball is a team game, and the ignorance of a few of the players is a reflection on the whole team. , I don't have the answer answer on how to stop "the word" from being used repeatedly repeatedly at the games. I don't think there is one. Maybe the players could behave like the third base coach who relays relays the signals. Instead of ' uttering "the word" the next time the urge strikes, players could simply adjust their cap, wipe their hand across their belt, and touch both ears. The "crew" will be the only ones in the park who know what it is you're saying. There were many intriguing costumes at this year's Caesarea Regatta parade on Saturday, including this young loyalist, complete with Canadian flag. This Regatta Gators float was one of the oustanding ones in the parade. Well-known Rick Gay holds one of his youngsters in a fantastic costume, but by the time we took t his photo, he'd had quite enough of this nonsense. i»W- ■nil mi mm Confusion. Over Scugog Councillor Marilyn Pearce, Mayor Howard Hall and Councillor Glenn Host vs. Source Communities Do wo want a Nuclear Dump in the Town of Newcastle? In 1986 a large group of people marched to Port Granby to register their objection objection to a nuclear dump in the Town of Newcastle. Our council listened to the people people and passed a resolution stating that wo would not be n "host community" for nuclear nuclear waste. Enter the Siting Task Force. This group, funded by the Federal Government, hns an objective - to find a suitable sito for n nuclear dump. To this end liaison groups are formed and sot up within the communities thought to bo possible "hosts". Tho liaison group would hold public meetings where people could listen, question, reject or approve and whore much literature provided by tho Siting Task Force is available. This is called "Opting for Cooperation", Cooperation", Wo in tho Town of Newcastle Newcastle have such ns linsion W ). My question is why? is tho tnx-pnyor, through tho Fotlornl Government, Government, funding n linison group when our oloctcd council hns already given n resounding NO to tho idea of a dump sito in our area? In my opinion, tho democratic concept of "Opting for Coopération" Coopération" would bo to nbido by tho will of our oloctcd council, a " rso "= ** Orono Fuel & Lumber "See us for all your Building Needs " Panelling " "Provincial Oak" Press Board panelling ■PF* "White Wainscotting" 48" wide x 32" high .
