Playing on their home field Monday night against Solina, a goal mid-way through the first half was all they needed for a 1-0 victory. victory. The series shifts to Solina tonight for game two in the best of three series. Game ' three (if necessary) will be back in Orono on Monday night. As was the case with the provincial debate held on the same ' evening, both teams were claiming somewhat somewhat of a victory following the contest. "It was a close game, but we proved to them tonight that we can stick with them," said Solina player/ coach Jeff Knox following the game. "They're a good team, but I feel we're just as good or even better." John Satiriadis, who was Orono's best offensive threat on the evening, wasn't sur- . prised that the game was a tight one. "No I'm not surprised at the way they played us tonight," tonight," he said, adding "they're a tough, underrated underrated team." "Everyone on our team hustled tonight and in most ' cases got to the ball first. We also played well defensively." defensively." Orono capitalized on their best chance in the first half as Treffor Davies one- timed a pass from Shawn Bailey into the lower left hand corner of the net. Solina pressured the Orono Orono defence throughout the contest, but couldn't shake anyone loose for a clear shot. Their best opportunity came in the first half when one of their forwards was dragged down from behind after Orono Orono keeper Rick Blais-Joris mishandled the ball. No call was made on the play. The lack of goal production production has been a problem for Solina all season. "We have the type of team that has to keep the goals against down," admit ted Knox. "Tonight was a good example, we had lots of pressure but couldn't get any breaks." "I don't think we'll change anything for Wednesday (game two), we'll take the same approach," he continued. "We came to play tonight, and showed them that we can beat them." Orono, according to Satiriadis, Satiriadis, will be looking to play the same style for game two. "We'll keep the same game, but we nave to finish off our scoring chances," he said, adding that he expects a change in Solina's game. "I think they'll shoot more, and use their wings instead of driving down the middle so much. With tongue firmly planted in cheek, here are some sports-related thoughts I gathered while vacationing... I read in a Toronto newspaper last week that Canada's Anne Murray is rumored to be involved with the group trying to acquire an NHL franchise franchise in Hamilton, One of the stipulations will probably read that Ms Murray gets exclusive rights to singing the national national anthem at all 40 home games. And if she wasn't available, perhaps Rose- anne could always sing a few Barrs. Incidentally, a spokesman spokesman for Ms Murray denied denied the rumor. • • • My hopes of obtaining press credentials to the NHL franchise Port Hope was trying to obtain were dashea last week when they withdrew their bid. Not that I would have been turning my back on the Eagles, but neck, this is the NHL we're talking here. Maybe the investors of the expansion franchise could use some of the $50 million required to obtain a team, and give birth to a now Jr. 'C franchise for the city. It's a shame that after all of the good teams Port Hope iced over the years, that they had to fold a couple of years ago. • • • Question: What did Pete Rose toll reporters when they asked if ho was receiving preferential preferential treatment from prison prison officials? Answer: "Wanna boll" I know, I know. Bad Oshawa superfan, Terry Terry Kelly, mailed me a copy of The National, a new daily sports paper that's available in test markets in the U.S. This particular copy is from New York, where Mr. Kelly was attending the Hall of Fame induction induction ceremonies in Cooper Cooper stown. It's not available in Canada yet, but if you see it on the newsstands in the States, pick it up. It really is a good read. I thank Mr. Kelly for sending me a copy. I have never met him before, but anyone with the last name of Kelly can't be all that bad! .. • Mark Ilebscher is a laugh a minute when he delivers the. baseball highlights nightly on Sportslino. One after the other, the guy comes up with nicknames for the players during the highlights. The best one last week was used on Walt Weiss of the Oakland A's. Walt "Chicken Fwicd" Weiss, ho called him. • 66 A few weeks ago I wrote about the fun my mom makes of Toronto Maple Leaf play-by-play announcers, when they mention A1 Infrnto (pronounced (pronounced I afraid lie) name. 'Dominican English she calls it when they say Infrnto (I afraid he) skates, Infrnto falls down, Infrnto scores, etc. Tears of laughter stream down her checks every Wednesday Wednesday and Saturday night. It wasn't until recently that I thanked the high heavens that she isn't n baseball fan. She would have a heyday heyday witli the name Larry Shoots.
