Har- vie Andre, and Canada Post Corporation to court. Legal counsel Ian Lawson, of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, filed a motion today in Ottawa at the Federal Court of Canada to quash the decisions to close the post offices in Arran. Sk., Falmouth, N.S., Meauctic, N.B. and Aroostook, N.B. Cynthia Patterson, national national coordinator of Rural Dignity, a citizens' group working to save rural postal service, believes legal action was its only recourse. "Even though Canada Post turned a 149 million dollar profit this year, Mr. Andre continued continued to allow the corporation to go ahead and close post offices. As a result of .Canada .Canada Post's so called business .decisions made over the summer, people in these •communities will be travelling travelling considerable distances for basic postal services this winter unless something is done." Patterson says the corporation ignored communities communities clearly expressed desire desire to keep the federal post offices which had served them well. Canada Post also ignored a formal request by legal counsel in late August to rescind the closure dcc- sions. , An early hearing date of Oct. 19, 1990 has been set for the motion, in"consideration in"consideration of the difficulties being experienced by the many elaerly and fixed income people in these communities who do not own vehicles and are effectively denied access to postal services. "Several weeks have already gone by during which some of these residents have had to ravel up to 22 km. to pick up their pension cheques, send parcels parcels or purchase money or- , ders," Mr. Lawson explained. explained. Rural Dignity's solicitor, will argue that these post office office closures breach the Canada Canada Post Corporation act which requires the corporation corporation to maintain basic customary customary postal serivee. 23 >• »•' ni b ■i ■•a '■i *«' ■ J ha 'u f* I r i Memorial Hospital Bowmanville was the recipient of a bed suite and an orthobiotic chair thanks to donations donations made to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
