The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, November 14,1990 9 Bowmanville Midgets Drop Game to Uxbridge y y, Upon arriving home ■. from work one day last week, a note from the missus was left for me on n a scrap piece of paper. L The Toronto Star •• called was all it read. The Toronto Star? Hmmm...What could they possibly want to talk to me about, I wondered? Maybe it was one of the sports writers who a. cover the Leafs, I began -i to imagine.... "Hello, this is Brad -■ Kelly returning a call," I • 1 said into the phone. r ' "Yes Mr. Kelly, could y, you please hold the line," "j replied the voice from the . other end. K, After a pause, a husky voice came ringing through the dial. "Yeah is this Brad Kelly, Kelly, the guy from that weekly paper in...where the heck is that place again.?" "Bowmanville," I bellowed. bellowed. "Yea that's it. Anyway, Brian" "No it's Brad," I corrected corrected him. You learn in this business that guys who work at daily newspapers newspapers tend to forget the names of those who work at a weekly. After all, the pleasure is all ours. "Anyway, Brad. I'm in my first year of journalism journalism and I'm having a little little problem here. I cover the Leafs and they're a sorry lot right now. you know. You've probably read some of my stuff." Mistake number one rookie, I thought to myself. myself. Never give someone an opportunity to answer whether or not they read your articles. "No, sorry I haven't," I said slowly, imagining his eyes widening Then I added a sure-fire zinger. "I don't read your paper." At this time, it wouldn't have surprised me if the conversation had ended right there. "Well anyway Brian (O.K. we're even) watch- * ing the Leafs, this season has really got me down," he said depressingly. / "No doubt. I've heard some of the jokes going around about the beloved Maple Leafs. The ones about them not having as many points as a square, and having more floaters than Red Fisher has in his tackle box." "Well that's why I called. I heard about that Junior team you've got down there, and was wondering if you could set aside a ticket for me some night. I don't want to travel all the way down there, and not be able to get in. It would be a refreshing change to watch a winning hockey club." "Get in, are you kidding kidding me! The Eagles don't sell out for their home games. There are plenty of good seats every night. The only time people come out in droves is when they get into .the playoffs. And even then they only flock to the rink if it's the finals." Considering the period of silence from the other end, I figured he didn't believe me. "They must be a spoiled group down there I tell ya. The Gardens is filled to capacity for every Leaf game during the regular season. Ana look at what a sorry bunch they are." 'You tell those fans down there that they are awfully fortunate to have a winner in their own back yard, and they shouldn't take the team for granted. Tell them a lot of work goes into developing developing a winner, and with the winning tradition tradition that club has over the years, they deserve better support. After all they could have a team in town with the record of the Leafs. Remind the fans of that." Consider it done. Family Trust Faces Esso Oilers Checkers Dines on Dykstra's The table was set. Checkers Checkers Variety, on a two game losing streak, was to take on Dykstra's Deli, unbeaten yet this year. Coaches Hamel and Thrasher banged their heads together to try and come up with a lineup to defeat defeat the unbeaten Deli team. With one of their stars, centre Mike Ferj jured, and two of team members out of the lineup, some major line juggling juggling was in order, it was decided, decided, that Craig Schumacher Schumacher would be moved from his normal defence position to centre and in his place, Stephen Stephen Wraith would move back from his winger responsibilities responsibilities and try his hand at defence. Both moves proved to be a positive step as both boys really helped to make the coaches look like they knew what they were doing. The two forward lines of Travis Laughlin, Jagject Riar, Kevin Seiffert and Craig Schumacher, Brad Sutherland, Sutherland, David Moriarity y son, ïrv- jelled as if they had played the other together all year. The defence defence of Chris Hart, Jeff Thrasher. Philip Gushulak and Stephen Wraith did an excellent job in the corners and guarding the front of the net. When the Dykstra's team managed to break through the front lines they were met by what seemed to be the unbeatable Shawn Honeyman. With his Gump Worsley style of goaltending, he stopped many a valiant effort effort by the Deli team. Final score of the hard- fought contest was Checkers Variety 3, Dykstra's Deli 2. The efforts of all the players were appreciated by the coaching staff and parents parents alike. In the middle part of the first period the Tigers lit up the scoreboard when Clayton Clayton Kohn passed up to Darren Darren Crawford who lifted the puck over the shoulder of the goalie in the net. The Hydro team then tied the game up with no time on the clock. The Hydro goal woke up the sleeping Tigers as Chris Watson grabbed the puck off a Hydro player, fed a pass over to Gavin O'Donnel who let a shot go that the Hydro goalie coulda't control ,allowing David Hollingsworth to punch the loose puck into the net. The Tigers then took a two-goal lead. Again, Chris Watson grabbed the loose puck ana passed to Gavin who made no mistake in scoring the goal. The Hollingsworth Tigers are now playing as a team and this should only mean good things will happen this year. After two wins to start off our season, Lange's Photo peewees ran into hot goaltending goaltending in our next two starts. First it was Clayton Rendell in the Dykstra's net and then the tandem of Phillip Phillip Foster and Steve Sergeant Sergeant for Mr. Sub. Fortunately Fortunately our own goalie, Jeff Parry, was equal to the task and the result was back-to- back ties. On November 3, we were at home to Dykstra's and were able to strike first. In the first period, David Chambers found the mark with an assist by Jason Bu- bar. We • were able to hold the lead until early in the third period when Dykstra's scored on a power play to earn the tie. On November 10, we hosted Mr. Sub and the results results were similar. We jumped out into a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Nick Katsikis unassisted and Damien Jay from Jason Bubar. Mr. Sun came back to score in each of the next two periods resulting in tie number two. Coach Powell went back to his drawing board and was overheard discussing new strategy for our upcoming upcoming game against Holy Cross of the Oshawa CYO league that evening. Holy Cross proved to be formidable opponents and the end-to-end action was a real crowd pleaser. Our forwards forwards were much more aggressive aggressive at fore-checking and our defence cleared the puck well. Defenceman Steve Bonneau Bonneau was flying and scored in each of the first two periods periods with Tim Bydal earning an assist on the second goal. Holy Cross scored in the third period but Jeff Parry was stingy the rest of the game and preserved a 2-1 win. . Team efforts win games, and with that in mind we hope to continue our success throughout the season. Later in the second period, period, the Esso team scored to give them a three-goal lead and what looked like an easy win. But the Tigers didn't roll over and quit. The second Tiger goal was obtained obtained by good passing as Mike McCrory passed up to Chris Watson, who then skated down the ice, making a pass out to David Hollings- woreth in front of the net. David picked the upper corner corner of the net. Less than a minute later, the Tigers lit up the scoreboard again as David and Gavin O'Donnel were left unprotected in front of the 401 Esso net. They moved the puck back and forth until David slipped it under a tired goalie. goalie. The last three minutes of the game found both coaches going for the win. The 401 Esso team scored on a screened shot that the Ti-. gers Goalie, Ryan McRoberts, McRoberts, had no chance on.
