Tfï Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowman ville, December 12,1990 3 Colorful Christmas at Cullen Gardens by Andrea Adair If you are looking for a real winter wonderland, you don't have to go further than Whitby to find it. Cullen Gardens and Miniature Miniature Village is once again celebrating the Christmas season with their annual Festival of Lights. Over 100,000 twinkling lights enhance over 25 acres of gardens to entertain both young and old children. Carol Pudlis, marketing manager at the Gardens, said any time alter 3 p.m. is a good time to visit because the lights are just beginning to sparkle. Christmas trees, covered bridges and even miniature houses sport lights of all colours colours for Christmas. One of the favourite attractions attractions at the gardens is the Santa Claus parade. It's a miniature version of the Toronto parade, but it's bigger this year than it ever has been. Ms Pudlis points out that eight new floats A reproduction of some of the floats in Toronto's iature Village during their annual Festival of Lights Santa Claus parade is just one of the many attrac- Santa Claus, a musical revue and thousands ot tiens to entertain visitors at Cullen Gardens and Min- Christmas lights are also featured. Orono 983-5974 In Editor's Mail Dear Editor: On this last day of November, November, I remember sacrifices sacrifices made by Canadians. It is really not very bright to simply simply throw them away. I can not accept Canadians Canadians telling other Canadians what to think and how to say it. Freedom of speech is a right we won. I will make no list of words I can not say. People have always come to this land for what they could get. Our local early settlers were of mixed race. They valued the land taken by Indian treaty. They fought the U.S. and their own governments for a bet^ ter life than what was offered. offered. Men died for their beliefs beliefs (1800's). How well are we planning planning for those treaty lands to day? Who will be fed by them tomorrow? We should apologize to no one. We do not owe the people people of the world a thing. We have paid in full as we have gone along. We are in debt from paying. Hungry people are forced to do strange things, so poverty poverty is greatly to be feared. We live in a rich land that owes billions of dollars to three countries. Since we can not repay, I would suggest suggest we people are indeed very poor. Are those three countries already foreclosing on the mortgage? Favours certainly are Toeing asked and Canada seems in the "heel" position. We tie yellow yellow American ribbons around trees. Fear of starvation is the cause of war. Government seems to lack the will to feed our hungry now. There are more daily. How many hungry hungry Canadians make a war? How can we help? Some of you may remember the 1930's work camps. Our young people were picked off the streets and sent. It was safer and looked better not to see the jobless. There have been many sacrifices! People who came, here must be Canadians. No' by-' phens. They would do well to drop their multicultural demands and work with the rest of us to make a future for our children. WASP is a derogatory term. It belittles colour, race and religion. If you are against free speech, this is one more for your list. I would just to sign myself, myself, 1 For Canada. have been added. Throughout the gardens, there are a number of new Christmas displays from skating reindeer in "Reindeer "Reindeer Round Up" to hockey playing frogs in "Hoppy Night in Canada." One of the attractions Ms Pudlis made particular note of is the international Christmas display. "The ruins", where a fire destroyed the former Village Restaurant, is the location now of seven different Christmas trees, decorated in the traditions of seven different different countries. Scandana-, via, Japan and France are some of the nations represented. represented. __ The Lynde house, built by two of Whitby's first settlers, settlers, Jabez and Clarissa Lynde, in 1812, is decorated for Christmas and depicts a typical day in the life of the family. In addition to the merriment merriment of the season, the traditions traditions of Christmas are also highlighted in' two nativity scenes. In one, the story of the Huron nativity is told. The second scene uses sheep and a donkey bring life to the Christian nativity. And, of course, the jolly old elf himself is at the gardens gardens daily from 10 to 9 a.m. and from 2 to 8 p.m. on weekends. Mrs. Claus is also there. The festival of lights is on daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 6. Beginning December December 27, the Winter Carnival Carnival completes the Cullen Garden's season. Ice sculptures, puppet shows and sleigh rides are some of the events featured during the carnival. The gardens are wheelchair accessible. To get there, take highway. highway. 401 west to Brock St., north to Taunton Road and turn left and follow the signs.
