Durham East residents are waging a war on waste, according to their member of the Provincial Legislature. In the Ontario Legislature Legislature Monday afternoon, Durham Durham East MPP Gord Mills praised local garbage- reduction programs for their efforts in reducing trash. "Every week, the average person in this country produces produces 19 pounds of garbage," Mr. Mills said. And he added added that this has created a garbage disposal crisis in almost almost all of our communities. "I am proud to say that the people of Durham East are fighting back and waging waging a war on waste," said Mr. Mills. The Durham East MPP went on to note that local residents Pat Lycett and Kristin McCrea have launched the Garbage Reduction Reduction Program. He added that they convinced 77 per cent of the people in a six- mile area of Durham to save their garbage for four weeks. Residents were shown how to compost, reduce, reuse reuse and recycle. "The results have been spectacular," added Mr. Mills. "The amount was cut from 19 pounds of garbage per person per week to approximately approximately one and a half pounds." "By educating people on. shopping smart, buying products with low waste packaging, and purchasing articles that can be re-used, real reductions in waste were achieved. What could not be recycled was composted composted in 30 backyard compos- ters," the MPP continued. He also singled out several several other organizations making making an important contribution contribution on environmental issues. These included: Newcas tle Environment Committee; The Committee of Clarke Constituents; Zero Garbage Group; Durham Recycling Group; GOOD Committee; Save the Ganaraska Again; Port Granby/Newcastle Environment Environment Committee; STORM; and the Port Dar lington Community Association. Association. "These local groups are pleased to finally have a responsive responsive government -- one that not only listens to them, but works in partnership partnership with them," Mr. Mills said. Problems at D.G.S. A fueling problem in one of the fuel channels in a reactor reactor at Darlington has led to a reduction in power at the station. Sue Stickley, community relations officer at Darlington Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, Station, said electrical power is being lowered from 100 to 65 percent. "Ontario Hydro staff are working with the fuelling equipment manufacturer, Canadian General Electric in Peterborough, to test remote remote methods of removing a damaged fuel bundle from one of the reactor channels and sealing that channel," she explained. Until the channel is sealed, she said, the reactor can't be refueled Power is being reduced to extend .the life of the fuel in the reactor. Ms Stickley noted that while the output of electricity electricity is being curtailed, public and employee safety is not affected. Ready for the trip to Grandmas?
