But this night standing by the tree, singing the old familiar Christmas carols, and the family joining in, with some other people also, who were staying with us, they slept in the pigpens. Now this is not as baa as it sounds. In summer all of the barn part of the house is whitewashed, whitewashed, and the floors scrubbed, so with fresh straw and the cows being on the other side of the barn, it is nice, warm and comfortable. comfortable. There always seemed to be extra people around these days. The Allied 'Forces had gotten as far as Nijmegen and many people around the warfront became homeless and separated from families. The young girl did not notice notice that they were not singing singing and that there were some tears. She was just caught up in her own world, the tree, the lights. A few hours before they had walked through the field to evening Church and the Sunday School Christmas Christmas program. A beautiful clear night, with stars twinkling in the sky. This night there were no bombers overhead, as other nights going to Germany dropping their bombs and later coming back. This night walking in the evening air, there was Peace all around. This one night in the year both military camps were at rest, in their own way they were celebrating celebrating the Birth of the Prince of Peace, there was quiet in the air, the serenity of the Special Day. One day for "Peace on Earth Goodwill to Men." And the little girl sang the song. Silent Night, Holy Night, All is calm, all is Bright! How true those words were.
