It was a well-run activity sponsored sponsored by the Brooklin Whitby Whitby Minor Hockey Association Association and the Whitby Optimists. The Oilers' first game was against the Country Country Style Donut Atoms from Ajax on Wednesday, December December 26. Wè won the game by a score of 8-2. The first goal of the game was scored by Ajax. Jason Frayne got our first goal with a nice pass behind the net from Jeff Carter. On the same shift, he scored - another another goal unassisted. Both teams scored one each in the second period. The Oilers got their goal from Josh Bonnetta assisted by Greg Patterson. Once again, the third period period belonged to the Oilers with five goals. Jason Frayne got his third goal and then set up Jeff Carter with a score. Oiler centre Ryan Winning had a natural hat-trick to end the game. Josh Bonnetta, Brian Tam- blyn and John Treleaven assisted assisted Ryan's markers. On Thursday, December 27, 1990, the Oilers played two teams from Whitby. We won the first game against Duff's Towing Atoms by a score of 5-2; Ryan Winning f ot three of our goals. Jason rayne and yours trulytoom- pleted the'scoring: We Were leading the game 3-0 going into tne third period ana both teams traded two goals each to end the game. The second game of the COACH'S CORNER: Ryan Winning won the MVP selection in all the games we played. In the final game, he personally gave the medal to goalie Brandon Renton. Four of the five games we played in this tournament were very close. Without the steady play of Brandon, bur team would not have been as successful. Ryan's gesture shows that he knows value of a team effort. The B.R.H.L. can be proud of their teams playing in this tournament. We held our own against competition consisting mostly of major age players in both the atom and peewee divisions. The Flying Dutchman Atom Toros played a fantastic fantastic defensive game, with excellent excellent goaltending to take the 'A' Championship in the Port Hope Tournament. Going Going up against 'A' and 'B' classified teams, the boys knew the task would not be easy and team effort was necessary. They scored a total total of nine goals, but allowed only two. The defence of Mike Leipsig, Erik Griffin, Richard Aasen and Steve Ewles (and Chris Baumhauer Baumhauer when needed) were at their best. The team appears appears to be much stronger with Steve back on defence. He is a very talented hockey player. Our first game was a barn-burner against Port Hope. Brent Stockman opened the scoring, assisted by Nicky Zdravkovski and Steve Ewles. But Port Hope tied it up in the third period to send the game into overtime. overtime. Jason Lange picked up a clearing pass from Steve and out-hustled three players to rive Bowmanville a 2-1 win. John Marco Cannito Cannito was excellent in net as was .Mike Walsh for Port Hope. * ; ; ' y The boys continued their checking game and defeated the LNHL Major Red Wings 3-0. Greg Konderman re corded the shutout, but not '•) before making many great saves. Jason Lange opened the scoring with a 15-foot" blast to the top comer, as- J sisted by Steve Ewles. Then -i Erik Griffin sent a nice pass to Niki DeFreitas and he, in turn, sent a pass over to Jason Jason Lange for a 2-0 lead. Nicky Zdravkovski raced the .. length of the ice and, while ; falling, shot the puck into ; the net after receiving a ' pass from Niki DeFreitas. The Flying Dutchmen now had to face Ajax in the : final after they defeated Peterborough Peterborough 2-1. Ajax scored first, but the Toros came back with four unanswered goals for a 4-1 win. Chris Baumhauer got the tying goal unassisted. Craig Sar bine scored the game winner assisted by Niki DeFreitas and Mike Leipsig. Way to go Toros! WHITBY RRR-RRQ3 and the single score was by Jason Frayne. The Oilers jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period, only to have the Whitby team come back with three goals in the second second period. We got two goals to win the game in the last period. These three wins put us in the finals on Friday, December 28. The semi final game was against another Whitby team, the Provincial Signs Atoms. In another close game, we edged this team 4- 2. Ryan Winning did all our scoring with four goals. The Whitby team was down 4-1 going into the last period and outplayed the Oilers during the third. Oiler goalie goalie Brandon Renton kept us in, allowing only one further goal. The final game came against the Carnation Flower Flower Shop Atoms of the B.R.H.L. We lost 5-3 in a very exciting game. Ryan Winning started off the first period with a breakaway goal. Oiler defenceman Josh Bonnetta, put us two ahead with a slapshot from the slot set up by Scott Hodgins and Jason Frayne. The second period belonged to the Carnation Carnation team, with four scores. Forward Danny MacDonald MacDonald got three and his brother, Scott, scored once. With one second left in the period, Oiler forward Jeff Carter tipped in a pass from Ryan Winning to stay within within a goal. Tne third period was our best hockey of the season. We had many chances that were stopped by Carnation goalie Jeremy Bowen. Our goalie made several saves on breakaways, mostly by the MacDonald brothers. Scott MacDonald got their last goal in the final minute. Carnation were the tournament tournament champions and we received received the runner-up trophy. way only to be stopped on a nice pad save by the Lindsay goalie. On the same play, Lindsay rushed right back to take a 1-0 lead. Dennis Pizza finally hit the score- board in the middle of the second period when Matt Stout scored with assists from Blake Aylsworth and Richie Kearns in a goalmouth goalmouth scramble. The game did not remain tied very long before Lindsay scored on a breakaway. Both teams played extremely well with rushes up and down the ice. With the score 2-1 in Lindsay's favour, the Toros were pressing to even the score up when Lindsay took a penalty. Bowmanville had their chances, but they came up with the short end of the stick when a Lindsay player intercepted a clearing pass and beat our goalie to give them a 3-1 lead. This goal just seemed to take the wind out of the boys' sails as Lindsay Lindsay fired in two more goals to defeat the Toros 5-1. This was a well-fought game with the score not truly indicative of the play of the game. In their second match, the Toros met Whitby. For the first five minutes of the first period, it appeared the Toros were still suffering from their loss to Lindsay. Then they' found their wheels. Mike Patrick scored a pair of goals, with assists from Ricnie Kearns and Mark Hoar to give the Toros a 2-0 lead to close out the first period. Whitby came back on a power play in the second period to close the gap to 2-1 in favour of the Toros. Towards the end of the second period, on a pass from Darryl Adams and Joel Tymchuk, Mike Patrick notched his third goal to restore restore the lead to two goals. Matt Stout gave the Toros a 4-1 lead on a pass from Richie Richie Kearns to round out the scoring and advancing Dennis Dennis Pizza to the 'B' Championship Championship final. In the final, the Toros met Trenton for their third game in six hours. The first aged Mike period was dominated by the Toros, but they only man- a one-goal lead from Patrick with assists from Jamie McCarthy and Mark Hoar. In the second period, the team made some nice passing plays, with Darryl Adams scoring from Blake Aylsworth and Richie Kearns hitting the twine with assists to Stephen Hoar and Stout to take a 3-0 lead. Early in the third period, Aylsworth (from McCarthy) slid the puck past the Trenton Trenton goalie to give the Toros a four-goal lead. Trenton came back to score two goals in 90 seconds to close the gap to 4- 2 with six minutes left in the game. It looked like nail biting time (for the coaches and parents) as the team needed to re-group. The Toros Toros displayed maturity as they continued to play as a team and were rewarded 60 seconds later on a goal by Andy Gifford from Adams and Aylsworth. This goal seemed to finish off Trenton as Bowmanville popped in two more goals (Aylsworth from Stout and Sinclair; Adams Adams from Tymchuk and Patrick) Patrick) to bring home the 'B' championship.
