The Region of Durham and the county of Northumberland have agreed to jointly coordinate coordinate an aerial spray program program in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to help combat the infestation of the gypsy moth pest. The gypsy moth caterpillar caterpillar is one of the most serious defoliating insects of hardwood hardwood stands in southern and central Ontario. The program is partially subsidized by the Ontario Ministry Ministry of Natural Resources. The administrative budget for the Region is covered 80% by the provincial government and 20- % by the Region. The landowner landowner cost for spraying is based on a sliding fee schedule of a flat fee of $60.00 for the first three acres, and additional $ 15.00/per acre for the next 4 to 15 acres, $ 10.00/acre for the next 16 to 50 acres and $1.00/ acre for over 50 acres. These funds arc applied to the direct spray costs with the balance also being picked up by the province. Northumberland County has been involved with the program program since 1986 and is now experiencing a decline in the infestation. The highest concentration concentration appears to be in Hope Township, adjacent to the most eastern boundary of Durham Region. The infestation dramatically increased within the Region last year, prompting participation participation in the program. According to aerial assessments per- fonned by Forestry Canada this' past summer, there was 2,838 hectares of moderate to severe defoliation caused- by the gypsy moth caterpillar. In 1990 the defoliation was only 567 hectares. Provincially the overall picture is worse. The infestation has now moved further further west into the province and north into the Muskoka area. Over 347,000 hectares were Money to make payments on his family's new home in Courticc and on bills. For Neville De Silva it is a way of life for the time being, And it's one that he enjoys. detected with moderate to severe severe defoliation, the highest ever in the province. Now is the time for landowners landowners to inspect their wood- lots for egg masses which generate generate into caterpillars next spring. The new egg masses laid late summer and early fall arc a beige colour, with a soft fuzzy coating, are firm to touch and arc about the size of a "loon" coin. Old masses arc generally bleached out and have tiny pin holes where the caterpillars emerged last spring. The masses can be found anywhere, mostly in sheltered places such as on the underside of branches, the bases bases of trees and under rocks and twigs. They will also be found on buildings, campers, lawn furniture, etc. Scraping the egg masses into a jar and burning them is an effective ways to eliminate isolate sightings, sightings, Large scale infestations may warrant other more effective effective control methods. The damaging damaging stage occurs in the spring when the caterpillars emerge and start eating the leaves. The most preferred species species are all oaks, poplar, birch and willow. Aerial spray operations take place between mid May and mid June when the caterpillars reach a certain stage and leaf development is almost full. The material used for spraying is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). The active ingredient of the spray material is a bacterium which occurs naturally in the environment, ' representing a natural or biological control of the insect. The insect must ingest ingest the material for effective control. In order to qualify for the aerial spray program the land- owner must have a minimum of 10 acres of continuous vulnerable vulnerable forest. Landowners may amalgamate to meet the acreage requirement.
