-The Week in Review: The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, November 13,1991 7 Toastmasters Leam About the Marvelous Power of Human Potential At tic November 5 meeting of Bovmanvillc Toastmasters, Chaiman Margaret Kropf took as heropening theme, the mar- vcloui power of potential. Potential Potential is of course only a want or need which must then be put into action. Toastmasters is an action organization, in which we leant and grow through every position we take at club or district level, and through every speech we give. But this growth can hurt. This must be recognized and the pain overcome. overcome. Members of the head table described their "pain" as that of nervousness, feelings of inadequacy, inadequacy, and the need to commit commit goals. Table Topics Chairman Connie Nelson asked us to be convincing during our one minute impromptu speeches. If there remained only one piece of survival equipment, we needed, in our role as someone else, to convince our audience that we should be the recipients. recipients. Among the various famous famous and infamous characters depicted were Saddam Hussein, Hussein, Nancy Regan, Roscannc Bam and Jimmy Baker. Toastmaster Randy MacGil- livray opened the prepared speech portion of the evening with a quotation, "It is not what you know, it is what you do with what you know." Toastmaster Marilynn Dow presented a demonstration speech entitled, Basic Training. Training. For this Speech, she required required the services of her boxer boxer dog, Spike, and he was most obliging. This is the first time a canine has attended the Bowmanville Bowmanville Toastmasters. The purpose of a training collar was demonstrated, as well as verbal and signal commands. We were promised a happier and more contented dog, because because the animal would now know what was expected. We were presented with the process of new ideas: insight which defines the problem, problem, preparation, in which information information is gathered, incubation, incubation, during which data is digested, illumination, the non verbal "Aha!", and verification of the solution. In order to increase increase our creativity, we were advised to record new ideas, become more aware of the world, read actively, taking notes and recording observations, observations, make time for creative activities, and to associate with creative people. Bags of popcorn popcorn were tossed to members of the audience who showed particular creativity during brainstorming sessions.
