The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, March 25,1992 9 By Brad Kelly Somebody Actually Wants This Job / Somebody Is after my job. At the conclusion of last week's column, it was noted that one particular correspondent, Kim Gadd, had/submitted stories for three different hockey teams during the winter. Some weeks, she had more bylines than I did. If her resume surfaced, I wrote, I would become nervous. Kim, apparently, has a great sense of humour. humour. Her resume appeared on my desk on Monday morning./ But Kim, I've got my own mortgage to worry about, j. Having said that, your resume has been forwarded forwarded to my editor. And, to show there are no hard feelings, I gave your application my personal endorsement endorsement and recomendation, asking that he sift through it carefully. Honest. I wouldn't lie. Is Bowmanville Next? Reports in a Cobourg paper say executive members members of the Cobourg Cougars will be travelling to Georgetown on March 30 to make a presentation to the Central Ontario Junior B hockey league in hopes of getting a team for next season. A franchise has been already granted to Port Hope by the league, but it still needs approval from the OHA. Several unnamed Oshawa businessmen are backing backing the team in Port Hope. Cobourg are following Lindsay, who jumped from Jr! C to the Jr. B ranks a couple of seasons ago. Cobourg will know if its. bid is accepted by the Central league by April 15. The OHA will then vote on their application, along with Port Hope's, shortly afterwards. Should Bowmanville be following Port Hope and Cobourg's lead? Learn the Rules, Buddy! It was during a Sunday afternoon game in Newcastle Newcastle in which the BRHL bantam selects were em- barrasing an Oshawa team 9-1. An offside at the Bowmanville blueline was called, and before the li- neseman could retrieve the puck, an Oshawa player flipped it over the glass. The referee assessed the, player an unsportsmanlike penalty. A fan, presumably presumably from Oshawa, yelled to the referee, "What are you. doin' ref? There's no penalty for being offside." The referee', in this case myself, didn't bother to explain. explain. , ■ Even They Make Mistakes Sifting /through Steve Simmons' column in the Sunday Sun, he made reference to a couple of Ontario Ontario basebâll players who are in the Boston Red Sox organization. One of the players he referred to was Port Hope pitching sensation, Phil Quantrill. His name isiPaul. Oops. Rupa Nearing a Title Shot Bowmanville's Nick Rupa had a title fight scheduled scheduled for May 30 on a Pernell Whitaker undercard- card, but Whittaker's fight was moved to South America, and the card was cancelled. So, next week Rupa leaves for Arizona to spar with Meldrick Taylor, Taylor, who fights on May 9. There is a possibility that Rupa could get a tune-up fight on the undercard. Following that, negotiations are under way for a welterweight title fight in June or July. Destinations to Go Bantams Hope to Clinch Sunday by Brad Kelly Coach Paul Jackman described described his team's play as, "scrambled" following the opening game of the All- Ontario 'AA' minor bantam finals. That may be true. But, after after two games of the series, it is the opposition, Chatham, that is now scrambling to stay in the scries. Backed by a pair of wins on the weekend, 5-2 in Bowmanville Bowmanville on Saturday and 5-3 in Chatham on Sunday, the Toros are one win away from clinching their second consecutive consecutive All-Ontario title. They now have a two games to zero stranglehold on the scries, with game three slated for Chatham this Sunday. Sunday. Game four, if necessary, will be back in Bowmanville on Saturday, April 4. "No, we're not," replied Jackman when asked if his team would be interested in throwing Sunday's game' in Chatham for the opportunity to return to Bowmanville and win the title on home ice. Game five, if necessary, would be in Chatham on Sunday, Sunday, April 5. They might as well cancel the ice time now. The over three hour journey journey down the 401 had little effect on the Toros Sunday in game two of the series. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead before before two late goals in the second second period brought Chatham to within one. A power play goal early in the third pul the Toros up 4- 2, before Chatham again cut the lead to one. A late power play goal secured secured the 5-3 win for the Toros. Toros. It marked their ninth win in a row in post-season play. After eliminating Vaughan in the sixth game of their opening opening scries, the Toros posted back-to-back three game sweeps over Cedar Hill and Hamilton. Saturday, in game one of the scries at the Darlington Sports Centre, Allan Lacey and Jason Jackman notched a pair of goals each in leading Bowmanville to a 5-2 win. Brad Onniston had the other. Ryan Ellis, with a pair, replied replied for Chatham. "We were off game conditions conditions for two weeks," said Jackman after Saturday's game. After sweeping their semi-final scries, the Toros have had a two-week layoff. "It (the layoff) takes a bit of a toll because you can only practice at such a pace." Saturday's game was one of those which ' was much closer than the score indicates. indicates. Chatham goalie Willie Mooney looks behind him for the Toros. The minor bantams lead their All- into the open net as Bowmanville's Allan Lacey (8) Ontario 'AA' best-of-five final two games to zero, scored his second goal of the afternoon in a 5-2 win and can wrap up the title on Sunday in Chatham. It was Chatham who jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, while their goaltcndcr, Willie Mooney, kept the Toros Toros off the board. That changed only 20 seconds seconds into the second period when Ormiston scored to lie the game. The biggest goal of the game was Lacey's first of the afternoon when he redirected redirected a Greg Knox slapshot slapshot from the point past Mooney. Mooney. Only eight seconds remained remained in the second period. And, with the momentum, Jackman stepped out in front from behind the net and slid a shot along the ice into the far corner 48 seconds into the third. Chatham managed to pull to within one, but Lacey restored restored Bowmariville's two- goal lead when lie knocked in his own rebound. Jackman added another into an empty, net when he out-raced two Chatham defencemen defencemen to a loose puck with 29 seconds left in the game. "I maybe expected a little belter game out of them (Chatham)," said Jackman on how the opening game went. "They played Cambridge Cambridge (in the semi-finals) a little more physical than they did us today. "The boys came up a notch, though, and finished their checks well. We should be all right." A win on Sunday afternoon afternoon will make that last sentence sentence the understatement of the year. Last year as pccwccs, Bowmanville won the All- Ontario title. They also added an Onutrio Hockey Federation Federation championship to their list of accomplishments, defeating defeating the best teams in the MTHL and NOHA. Ten players from that team arc with this year's minor minor bantams. At OFSAA Finals Consolation Title For Clarke Girls by Brad Kelly What a difference a day makes. In both instances, instances, Clarke won the first game of the match, only to drop the next two in a row. Against the host team from Lambton/Kcnt, Clarke won the opening game 15-12, but dropped successive games by 15-13 and 15-12 scores. In their second match against St. John's (Perth), they opened with an easy 15- 2 win before losing 15-7 and 15-12. "We had quite substantial leads in both final games (15- 12 losses)," said Dobson. Clarke played the type of volleyball they were capable of the remainder of the tournament. tournament. They bounced Red Lake in the quarter-finals of the consolation round, and followed followed with a win over Rockway Rockway (Northern Ontario) in the semis. In the finals, they were pitted pitted in a rematch against St. John's. They avenged their earlier loss with easy 15-6, 15- 5 wins. "If we played at the be ginning as good as we did at die end, we would have finished finished in the lop four," said Dobson. Despite not playing up to their potential the entire tournament, tournament, Dobson wasn't disappointed disappointed with the way the season ended. "I hoped going in dial we would finish somewhere in the middle of the pack," lie said. Clarke, had advanced to OFSAA after winning the gold medal at the COSSA championships with a 15-2, 16- 14 win over Cloy ne in the finals.
