12 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, July 29,1992 1993 Rent Control Figures Set by Minister of Housing The rent control guideline for 1993 will be 4.9 per cent. The 4.9 per cent guideline is the first to be calculated under the new Rent Control Act, and is a reduction from the 1992 guideline of 6 per cent. Police Report Seven Fatalities Since June 3, 1992, this District has investigated a further seven fatal collisions which resulted in nine persons persons being killed. This brings our. year-to-date total to 28 collisions resulting resulting in 40 deaths. Two collisions occurred on Highway Highway 401, 2 on other King's Highr ways, two on county roads and one on a township road. Investigation has revealed that two of the collisions involved alcohol and in an additional two collisions, the victims failed to use seatbelts. Four of the collisions involved single single motor vehicles. In four of the seven collisions, the victims were area residents. One of the collisions involved an A.T.V. and one involved a motor vehicle vehicle and a pedestrian. To help us to reduce these tragic statistics we ask that you - don't drink and drive - wear your seatbelt The guideline is the amount by which a landlord can increase the rent for a unit once each year. Most tenants tenants in Ontario receive a rent increase no greater than the guideline. The guideline is based on increases in the costs of operating rental hous- ■ ing averaged over three years. These operating costs, of which property tax is the largest portion, accounts for 2.9 per cent of the guideline figure. The guideline also includes 2 per cent to cover the cost of repairs to the building. building. In some cases, landlords may receive receive an increase of up to 3 per cent above the guideline for necessary, legitimate legitimate repairs or for very high increases increases in utilities or property taxes. To receive an above-guideline increase, increase, a landlord must justify the costs at a rent control hearing. The Rent Control Act was passed by the government in June, and takes effect on August 10,1992. By August 10, the Ministry will have reorganized its offices and procedures procedures to administer the new system. Until then, the current rent review system system remains in place. Applications submitted prior to August 10 will be dealt with under the temporary rent review legislation. Applications submitted on or after August 10 will be handled under the new Rent Control Act.
