It would have been more courteous to have been addressed personally by the BIA to discuss any concerns they may have regarding the Create *N Sell Market. However, please allow me to address them now as rumors are spread through ignorance. I wish to impress upon those concerned concerned that the prosperity and well being being of Downtown Bowmanville has always been one of my main concerns. concerns. As a co-owner of a downtown business for 18 years I think I've earned that right. Considering the shaky state of the economy and the ever growing rate of unemployment, any business venture that potentially opens up opportunity for the small business person is greeted greeted with enthusiasm. The response by vendors to our market has been overwhelming. overwhelming. We have over 100 merchants merchants willing to start their small business business in our new market. These vendors could well expand their businesses businesses to become part of the same BIA that seems to greet them with unfounded unfounded disapproval. • . Many entrepreneurs have approached approached us and we have been encouraging encouraging and courteous to all inquiries as any good business person should, closing no doors tightly in these early stages of organizing. If you are new to Bowmanville... JU WELCOME SERVICE would like to call on you with Housewarming Gifts and Information about your new location. Call Your Hi Neighbour Hostess Mrs. Audrey Kchoe at 623-0395 However, the home craft area is our target audience and with this our aim we have called the market The Create 'N Sell Market. Since this is a unique idea we seem to be clumped in to the Flea Market category somewhat unjustly. This is a business venture which I hope will be profitable of course, but as a long time resident and merchant of Bowmanville I also hope it will become become an attraction to the area, enhancing enhancing the downtown and generating revenue revenue for the whole area. Just as the Apple Blossom Festival: and other BIA activities generate business, so too shall the market. To this end we will be open Saturdays as well as Sundays Sundays so that any newcomers drawn to the area can enjoy the entire downtown downtown atmosphere. As for the concerns mentioned regarding regarding licensing etc., we have voluntarily voluntarily contacted all the appropriate town depts. to ensure that we meet all regulations and codes. We would also work co-operatively with churches, etc. to ensure parking is for the entire community of which we arc part. The vacancy of several buildings in the downtown most certainly means higher BIA taxes for everyone. I would think occupation of one of the largest buildings in the commercial area would certainly case this shared tax burden and be most welcome in such difficult times. Many - of our inquiries have been from local people anxious to be part of what should be a growing downtown. downtown. There is a definite interest in Sunday shopping. One only has to check the Bowmanville Mall parking lot on Sunday to verify this. It is my hope that the Create 'N Sell Market will be a welcome addition addition to the downtown area, but rest assured assured the times are changing and our downtown can greet new enterprise with open arms or drive the business elsewhere. With a response like ours the Create 'N Sell Market will have a home soon and all will be welcome. Barbara Oke. Letters to the Editor Opposition to Changes in UIC To the Editor; The Tories have started on a new path of destruction for themselves and working Canadians. I am referring specifically to the proposed changes to the UIC act. The Tories have allowed the creation creation of our present high unemployment. unemployment. HoweVer they seem determined to blame the consequences of their actions actions on Canadians by this proposal. Many more inequities will be created in our society with this flawed approach. approach. I want UIC to accomplish its mandate and also since it is an insurance insurance plan, then it should be feasible financially. It must also be socially acceptable. acceptable. I suggest that: - Eliminating benefits if a person quits or-is fired, except in a very narrow narrow set of circumstances starts the process of pitting employer against employee., I say it hurts both parties because the worker is forced to stay at the job but the employer is stuck with an unmotivated worker; a bad idea for any business. - It creates more bureaucracy in the form of increased disputes over employer-employee employer-employee relation situations/ We do not need more regulations that complicate our lives. - The "snitch provision" smacks of government telling us that neighbours should not build "walkways of trust" anymore but put up walls that separate and divide our neighbours. I think that if the purpose of UIC benefits are to help bridge workers' incomes between jobs then the thrust should be to extend benefit periods but also lower the percentage pay out until there is no deficit. I offer this idea because it is a solution that reflects reflects our present economic situation where jobs are harder to find and also it would tend to encourage a worker to find another job sooner. Come on Tories have a heart! .There are better ways to run a govem- .ment than by dividing the very people you govern. Yours truly Glenn Malcolm 4021 Malcolm Rd. Nestleton, Ontario LOB 1L0 Dear Sir: I would like to take this opportunity opportunity to clarify an article in your February February 3, 1993 edition of the Canadian Statesman. In this issue, you reported on the opening of the Small Miracles Nursery School operating at the Newcastle Newcastle Village Community Hall. It was suggested that Newcastle . Village has been without a child care centre until this time. The YMCA-has been operating a licensed child care centre located at the Newcastle Public Public School on Beaver Street in the Village Village of Newcastle for a number of years. At this centre there is a program available for children in nursery school,, a program for full time day care and a before and after school program program for school age children. This centre is run by a very qualified qualified and professional staff and should not be overlooked by parents needing a child care facility. Yours truly Anna McQuaid Waverley Road, Bowmanville, Ontario Dear John: I am most puzzled by your editorial editorial in the Statesman dated Wednesday, February 10, 1993, and entitled Last Chance. For several years I had thought that • you were in favour-of a name change arid your approach would have been indeed much more positive. John, the citizens of this municipality municipality have already spoken in favour of the name change. 6000 signed a petition, over 7800 voted "Not to retain the name Town of Newcastle" and in a democratic . manner were given the opportunity to choose a new name. In selecting "Municipality of Clar- ington" we will put to rest all the confusion confusion and dissension generated over the years by two Newcastlcs. As I read in all the local newspapers newspapers Mayor Diane Harare has been commended for the manner in which the situation was handled at the local level. Durham Region has passed the request for the name "Municipality of Clarington" without any problem and ' we have been lead to believe that there will not be a problem at Queen's Park. When we become the Municipality Municipality of Clarington, with each community's community's own identity within this municipality, municipality, it will be like a breath of Spring to realize "Bowmanville" on our parks, Library, Cemetery, Buildings, Buildings, etc. Further, readers must 'be equally puzzled by next week's question under under "We asked and you said," "Should Council proceed with the renaming of "The Town of Newcastle" to the "Municipality "Municipality of Clarington?" Hasn't council already dealt with the name change? As I see the situation, the citizens have spoken and there is no last chance.
