.. g ■MR Toastmasters Learn About Long Term Success Plans The Canadian Statesman K/utoUe*., Bowmanville, Saturday, April 3,1993 3 By: Sher Leetoose, ATM The Chairman of the March 16th meeting, T.M. Dave Broughton, set the tone of the meeting with his theme, "Mastery: the key to long term success and fulfillment." He says, "It resists definition yet can be instantly recognized. It comes in many varieties yet follows certain unchanging laws. It brings rich rewards rewards yet is not really a goal or a destination destination but rather a process, a journey. journey. We call this journey Mastery, and tend to assume that it requires a special ticket, available only to those bom with exceptional abilities. But Mastery isn't reserved for the super talented or even for those who are fortunate enough to have an early start. It's available to anyone who is willing to get on the path and stay on it." The head table consists of Toastmasters Toastmasters in various levels of the Mastery Mastery process. The chairman, T.M. Broughton, was holding the position for the first time. T.M. Bob Shearman Shearman has been following his path to Mastery for about one year, while Toastmaster, T.M. Tom Gustar, was also holding this position for the first time. To evaluate the meeting, General General Evaluator, T.M. Irene Konzel- mann, a toastmaster of 10 years, working to Master her public speaking speaking qualities. ! The topics master, Bob Shearman, helped us master our knowledge of the Mafia by asking us to speak for one minute on a variety of words which included: consigliere, lupara, Valachi, carbonara, Cosa Nostra, Carabinieri, Carabinieri, omerta, capo des capi, Benjamin Benjamin Siegel and cassetta. Of course, most of us are not linguists linguists (we are still learning to master our own language!) and we did not master the words he asked us to describe, describe, but playing the part of the 'godfather' for one minute was fun. We also found out that Mafia is an arabic word meaning refuge. During the second half of every Toastmaster meeting we get down to serious work, and present 'prepared* speeches. Our first speaker, T.M. Marilyn Dow spoke on the subject of The Volunteer: we can't do it without you. With well presented visual aids, T.M. Dow explained how volunteers are the backbone of many organizations, organizations, and what kind of people make up the volunteer population of this country. According to Stats Canada at least one out of four Canadians over the age of 15, is a volunteer, two out of three Canadians are likely to become a volunteer, the estimated volunteer value in Canada in 1990 was 12 billion dollars. The second speaker for the evening, evening, T.M. Leonic Holder, spoke on Our Children and Change. Change is the creative process. Will our children children be able to adapt to our electronic future? How will they take their place in the new age of technology without a proper education? Many of our children come out of school unable unable to read. With our present system of teaching, 25% of our students never never learn to read. Our leaders lack both the will and the backbone to implement implement change. The third portion of each meeting is devoted to evaluating not only the speakers but the overall meeting, and the handling of the processes that keep it lively and on time. Speakers are evaluated so that they become aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. The head table is evaluated so that those toastmasters toastmasters who have yet to sit in the various positions will have a better understanding of what to do when their turn comes. Head table toastmasters toastmasters also learn where they have strengths and weaknesses. The last item of business every week is to announce the various winners winners of the four weekly awards, which we have all been striving to achieve. This week, for the best evaluation evaluation of a speaker, the winner was T.M. Henry Lise. The best speaker was chosen as T.M. Marilynn Dow. The toastmaster who was able to give a one minute presentation and best describe the Topics Masters word was won by T.M. Marg Kropf, for her excellent description of 'cosa nostra' (T.M. Kropf was the only toastmaster to get the word right!) There is also a trophy for the person person deemed to have put a spark into the business session, and this was won by T.M. Marg Kropf. At the end of the year, the people who have the four trophies most often often through the year have their names engraved as that year's winner of the trophy. Encouragement and competition competition keep the meetings lively. If you would like to find out more about Toastmasters, come out to a meeting.
