I 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, June 30,1993 Reader Urges Residents to Form Own Opinion About Landfill Sites Ladies Auxiliary Makes Generous Donation to Hospital V' Z -; Dear Editor: I am writing to you in response to two recent letters you have printed from Helen MacDonald regarding the proposed waste disposal site in New- tonvillc. I have a B.A. in geography and my discipline is environmental studies', so when I read her letter I was quite interested. I proceeded to visit the Laidlaw Waste Site Information Information Centre in Newcastle Village, to find out more information. What I found was quite different than what Mrs. MacDonald had found. Since then, Mrs. MacDonald has written another letter that was published published in the Canadian Statesman. It is now obvious that she did not visit the information centre with an open mind. She is not in favour of the Newtonville site for Durham Region's Region's waste. She stated that she was speaking for the community but do not let her speak for me! Among the. hostility and bias rhetoric she makes few points in her argument. If Newtonville is picked as the E referred site in Durham Region, .aidlaw will then document, a more detailed proposal. At this point in the selection process it would be absurd to expect them to spend millions of dollars to hire civil engineers and architects architects to create detailed plans for a recycling complex. They now have a very well thought out concept. Laid- • law is a very successful, well capitalized capitalized company and is considered to be one of the pioneers in recycling technology. technology. They are a proactive company company that has the financing and capability capability of handling our waste and recycling needs in the Durham Region. Region. As a resident of the Town of Newcastle, Newcastle, my concerns of a proposed waste site arc; 1. Is the site safe:? 2. Are the people directly affected going going to receive fair compensation?, 3. What will it do for our community? Firstly, and most importantly, regardless regardless of who builds the waste disposal disposal facility, we can rest assured that it will be safe, The Ministry of Environment has the toughest standards standards in the world and will insure they remain high in Newtonville. With the. engineering technologies and safeguards available today, there is virtually 0% chance of environmental environmental contamination. Laidlaw has Youngster Concerned About KK2 Landfill Site Dear SirlMadam; I live within a kilometer from the proposed KK2 landfill site in Ncw- tonville and I think putting it on the short list was a very BIG mistake. For one thing Newtonville is in' the country and people come to the country to relax. Now, how do you relax with a horrible smell in the air • and a big heap of garbage beside you? Also, Newtonville is a small town and is not polluted yet. (but it will be if you put a dump there.) Why can't you keep the city's garbage garbage in the city? The city is already polluted. So, why don't you keep the pollution where it already is? I've also been thinking about the chemicals from the dump that will escape escape into our soil, and, of course, I know about the thick liner of plastic or clay that will prevent this from happening, but nobody and nothing is perfect, accidents can happen! Sincerely Jacqueline JIurvid Age 10 designed a state of the art waste disposal disposal system; rain water runoff from a farm would be several times more harmful. Secondly, Laidlaw will be putting together a compensation package that will be more than fair. They will include include property value compensations as well as noise reduction and aesthetic aesthetic landscaping compensations. The main issues to be considered in this case are the benefits that a waste site will bring into our local communities. Dumps are not like they used to be. They are clean and well maintained. The site will cost in excess of $50 million to build, and will employ up to 100 people. The government will not have to put up die capital for it, and it will provide the area residents with great purchasing purchasing potential. By employing these people, over $4 million will be injected injected into our local economy per year. Newcastle would also receive compensation compensation as a result of being the host community. Compensation that could Durham Region Receives Five Marketing Awards The Region of Durham recently received five awards for excellence at the Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) annual "Ontario Marketing Awards" competition. The main issue is to not let out (or our town council members) opinions be swayed by a vocal majority. Mrs. MacDonald was upset at receiving an invitation to find out more about the project, but I would think it would be beneficial to everyone to Check Out The Facts as I have and Form Your Own Opinions. The majority of people people do not voice their opinions very often, so I invite those people who think the waste disposal site would be an asset to our community (as I do) to let your Mayor know!
