Sometimes your muscles ache during exercise. Sometimes they don't hurt right away, but you sure know you have them a day or two later! Did you ever wonder why? In reviewing articles by Dr. Priscilla M. Clarkson, a well-known expert on the subject, the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute distinguished two types of muscle soreness. One is referred to as temporary soreness, the other as delayed-onset muscle soreness. Temporary soreness. During the last stages of fatiguing exercise, like cross-country skiing, people often feel moderate pain. This is usually caused by the build-up of products like lactic acid in the muscles. The strength lost at that time is recovered recovered in the next several hours. The soreness disappears quickly as well, hence it is called "temporary." Delayed-onset muscle soreness. This type of discomfort develops after exercise, usually within 24 to 48 hours. It is not'related to fatigue; rather, it is described as a dull, aching pain combined with tenderness tenderness and stiffness, which typically results from eccentric actions. In eccentric actions, muscles are lengthened as they produce force. They require less energy but are more vulnerable to injury than muscles which contract in other ways. This explains why hiking downhill, which has a lot of eccentric eccentric actions, leads to greater soreness soreness than hiking uphill. What happens during those mysterious 24 or 48 hours before full-blown soreness? Researchers • Repair doesn't start immediately after exercise. In fact, damage progresses further for a few days. are still looking for answers, but here's what they think for now: • Calcium ions accumulate inside the muscle cells, eventually leading to partial breakdown and rebuilding of muscle cells. • Chemicals like bradikinin and histamine accumulate and eventually eventually activate nerve endings that carry a dull, diffuse sensation of pain. • The delay in onset of soreness may be explained by the time required for the cells to die and the chemical substances to accumulate. accumulate. The good.news is: muscles adapt. With physical conditioning, less damage occurs. As little as one exercise session can reduce the amount of damage that occurs the next time you do the same activity. No need for pain here: exercise that isn't so vigorous can also make muscle fibers more resilient to damage. To avoid muscle soreness, try the following simple strategies: • If you haven't done an exercise for the last six weeks, take it easy at first. Let your muscles adapt slowly and gradually before increasing the intensity of your activity. • Warm up before you exercise-- not by stretching right away like many people do but by doing some light aerobic activity first (like running gently on the spot for a minute or so), followed by gentle stretching once your muscles are warm. • Tune in to your body. Soreness is a red-light signal; if you feel it, take the time to rest and let your muscles recover. 46-4SN BARR (416) 987-1445 Roofing • Sheet Metal • Windows FLAT ROOFS • SHINGLES • PRE-PAINTED STEEL A wide variety of shapes and sizes for • Addresses • Bank Deposits • GST Registration Numbers We also offer coloured ink. pads James Publishing Co.
