Here are some ways to enjoy shady gardening: •Study the shade patterns. Make mental or written notes of what is in shadow or sunlight, morning, noon, and afternoon at different seasons. • Consider the soil. If the shade comes from buildings, the soil there may be fill dirt left from construction with very little remaining topsoil. If the shade comes from trees and shrubs, their roots will compete with the grasses, grasses, ground covers or flowers for nutrients nutrients and moisture. If drainage is poor, plants growing in shade can be more prone to root rot and other disease problems. But all of these problems are easily solved by enriching and improving the soil with organic matter. "We do a lot of our shade gardening in half barrels. We use a three-part mix of good garden soil, Canadian peat moss, and either builders' sand, vermi- culite, or perlite," says Katy. Ground covers , such as ajuga, Bishops hat,.euonymus or wintercreep- er, blue fescue, wild strawberry, winter- green, sweet woodruff, ivy, pachysan- dra and vinca do best in shade. Annual coleus, begonias, browallia. godetias, impatiens, torenias and pansies pansies prefer shade. Among the perennials, perennials, choose columbine, astilbe, bleeding bleeding heart, hostas, daylilies, iris, foxgloves, foxgloves, primroses and violas.
