Fifth Game Proves Unlucky For Halminen Homes Team Goodyear Eagles Advance to All-Ontario Quarter-Finals The Bowmanville Toros Halminen Halminen Homes Bantams were eliminated from OMHA playoff action by Ajax in overtime in game five. The first four minutes of play produced four goals with Ajax getting getting three and the lone marker for the Toros coming from the stick of Nick Hand, with assists from Ryan Dunnigan and Tony Butzer. After this opening onslaught, the Toros got themselves together on defence while the offence threw everything they had at the Ajax defence. defence. They were rewarded with two minutes to go in the first period when Butzer beat the goalie with a slapshot from the blueline with Ajax a man short. Derek Lange drew the only assist. The Toros drew level after only 1:12 of the second period. Again it was Butzer scoring, this time assisted assisted by Cory Scott. Despite numerous chances by both sides, there was no more scoring in regulation time, which set up the overtime period. Again, both teams had many chances to score in this very entertaining entertaining game, but in the end, it was Ajax that got the all important goal. Even though there was more than six minutes left in the game, the Halminen Homes team could not solve the Ajax defence and the game ended 4-3 in favour of Ajax. Very quickly after being knocked out of tiie OMHA playoffs, the team had to start its series against Mark ham in the York-Simcoe playoffs. In game one, it was obvious that their minds were not in the game as Markham beat them by a score of 7- 2. Nick Hand and Darryl Cook scored and assists went to Matt Brake, Jason Bray and Rob Jeffers, who was called up from the Bantam additional team. Game two, played at Darlington, was a much better effort by the team and were unlucky not to win, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Cory Scott scored in the second period on an assist by Nick Hand. Needing a win in game three in Markham, the boys fell behind 3-0 very quickly before Derek Arnold opened the scoring for the Toros. Markham then scored again to take back their three goal lead. But two more goals by Arnold to complete his hat-trick midway through the second period, turned the tide. With the Markham team in retreat, it looked like only a matter of time before before the Halminen Homes team put the game away. However, when the team took to the ice in the third period, it was a different Markham team, as they once again took control of the game and they opened up a five goal lead before Matt Staley rounded out the scoring. Final score was Markham 8, Toros Toros 4. This eliminated the Toros from further playoff action. The Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles are hoping for another celebration like the one they enjoyed after beating out Port Perry for the Central League Championship. After trailing in the series, Bowmanville won three straight games, including a 7-3 victory in game seven at the Recreation Complex, to clinch their second straight league title. They opened their All-Ontario quarter-final against the Eastern League champions from Napanee last night (Friday), and, travel to Napanee tonight for game two. Remaining details of the series will be included in Wednesday's edition of The Canadian Statesman. at k Pea'cocK LUMBER 328 RITSON RD.
