John Bate, Sales Re Handling It ■ ■ By Lloyd Scott Marriage breakdown is a sad and painful time, often followed by years of slow recovery. One reason for the slow recovery is the continuing uncertainty. Was the separation the right move? Should I/we have tried harder for reconciliation? reconciliation? Can we still hope for happiness in our family? How adversely adversely will the separation affect the children. Do I still love him/her? Agonies over these and other doubts often lead separated couples into intermittent affairs with each other, after which they're usually guilty and dissatisfied. These "affairs" with each other tend to bring with them a return to the old habits of arguing and dredging dredging up past differences, leading to little little or no resolution. Post-separation intimacies virtually guarantee fresh pain. This is partly because they keep alive the ever-renewing hope in ' the mind of one of them that they may yet get back together. Just as unbearable as postseparation postseparation uncertainties can be, so can marital doubts that may or may not lead to separation be unbearable. I'm thinking about the wife or husband husband tortured by solitary thoughts- whether to end the marriage, or to keep it going in its unsatisfactory state, or to try to improve it. Unable to express such thoughts to their mates, for whatever reasons, these individuals individuals are lonely indeed. Once expressed, these doubts about the marriage naturally threaten one's partner, who may respond to angry ultimatums and demands. "Either "Either you want in this marriage or out of it." Either you love me or you don't." "If you don't love me, we're finished." "Make up your mind or I'm leaving." Such defensive reactions tend to polarize couples, moving them even farther apart. Some spouses cave in to ultimatums and demands, returning returning to their usual lonely silence. Also the greater the pressure from the angry, defensive spouse, the deeper the doubts about the marriage become become in the other's mind. So, raising questions and uncertainties uncertainties about marriage to one's partner partner clearly has its dangers. Repressing Repressing them does too. Silencing negative feelings about the marriage tends to enlarge and strengthen those negative feelings. Such silence also generates stress and stress-related pains and disorders. A spouse who can't speak about his or her marital unhappiness also increases increases the risk of the marriage worsening. In the midst of all this uncertainty, one thing is certain. And that is that every married person, at some time or other, has felt unsure about his or her marriage. Such doubts arc natural natural and universal. By and large, it's best for spouses to learn to break their silences and speak of their doubts in appropriate ways. Although each marriage is different different as to the best way to deal with a partner's (or partners') doubts, here are three guidelines. First, it's useful for each partner, or partnership, to get professional help in weighing the seriousness of their misgivings about their marriage. An unbiased third party can help couples air their marital dissatisfactions dissatisfactions and thus help them determine how relatively major or minor they are. Second, they may need practice in discovering their feelings, listening to their hearts and trusting what they hear enough to act on it. Or at least to speak about it. Searching out what they truly need is essential to individuals' individuals' understanding (and responding to) their own marital uneasiness. Long-term silent anxieties may prove to be more serious than they realize at first. Third, it's important to try to convey convey to one's spouse that things arc going going badly, or arc deteriorating- without blaming. Marriages themselves, themselves, as well as individual feelings, are often very fragile. dviviyty" - WHO/WHAT IS A REALTOR? Remaining emotionally under-ground promotes pain, increases distance between spouses and may conduce to ulcers and migraines. Undisclosed thoughts about the need for separation or for change within a marriage can become as unbearable unbearable as post-separation blues.
