1 Pitcher Hopeful of Starting Assignment Orono Resident Battles at University in Texas The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday. January 11,1995 9 Tobogganing Hill Still a Popular Choice Following Snowfall by Brad Kelly During a recruiting drive this past summer, officials at Wayland Baptist University in Plainvicw, Texas, piqued the interest of pitcher Mark Tranter when they mentioned that his name was penciled into their starling rotation. So far, the school hasn't reached for an eraser. The school was careful not to make a promise or guarantee. But the offer was enough to get the Orono Orono resident to transfer from Howard Junior College, also located in Texas. Texas. He had spent one year there. Tranter will learn if he made the right move upon returning to Texas at the end of this month after a prolonged prolonged Christmas break. "They told me that I will have an effect on the way die team plays. I didn't hear that last year,"he said of his discussion with coaches at Way- land Baptist. The comment was made prior to his departure to come home for the holidays. Tranter spent a frustrating year of enrollment at Howard, regarded as one of the most powerful junior college college teams in the United States. For the most part, he was relegated to the bullpen, where he spent much of his lime sitting, watching, and learning. learning. Those three items arc best applied applied in the classroom, not at the baseball park. So, over the summer, the left- handed pitcher went in search of a school that would provide him with a better opportunity to advance his development. Enter Wayland Baptist. Baptist. Head coach Jeff Livin, who played professionally with the Houston Astros, spent much of his time heavily recruiting pitching prospects. In Tranter, there was something he liked. "He is a control-type pitcher who knows what to do on the mound," was how he described his newest pitching talent. With those encouraging words etched into his mind, Tranter packed up and left for Texas in the fall, vowing to prove his coach's assessment assessment was correct. Unfortunately, the motivation backfired. Eager to impress, he strained his elbow at the first practice. practice. "It forced me to be more patient and concentrate on my mechanics," he said of the injury. Because of the slight change in Orono pitcher Mark Tranter is eager to return to Plainview, Texas, for the spring baseball schedule at Wayland Baptist University, where he is in his first year with the team. Home for an extended period period of time over the holidays, he has continued to work on his arm strength by pitching sandwiches at a local sub shop. Alumni Game Rosters An impressive list of former professional hockey players will highlight the annual Alumni Game that has become a popular attraction the past three years among Bowmanvillc Eagles fans. This year's game promises to be just as exciting as previous ones. The 1995 edition of the game will take place on Saturday, January 21, at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. The game will be played at 4:00 p.m., with a dance to follow beginning at 8:00 p.m. Representing the Bowmanvillc Eagles will be an alumni team comprised of players who were with the club for their All-Ontario championship seasons seasons in 1978-79 and 1980-81. That combination of players will meet an alumni lineup put together by the Oshawa Generals. Among those already confirmed are a number of Generals graduates who went on to play hockey at the professional level. And if the NHL lockout is still in effect, the Oshawa Generals lineup could also include current stars Brent Grieve (Chicago), Iain Fraser (Quebec), (Quebec), Rob Pearson (Washington), Dave Andreychuk (Toronto), and Jason Amott (Edmonton). Some of the ex-NHL players already committed to play in the game for the Oshawa Generals are Steve Cardwell, Rick Kesscll, Henry Nowak, Mike Amodeo, Jim Jackson, Danny O'Shea, and Kevin O'Shea. The following arc the rosters for both teams. Bowmanville Eagles Oshawa Generals Alumni All-Ontario Champions # Name Year 1978-79,1980-81 1. Scan Evoy # Name 3. Chan Knutson 75-76 1. Craig German 4. Randy Dcfoy Jason Amott Edmonton his delivery, he struggled with his control, and issued too many walks during exhibition games played as part of a fall schedule. He persevered, however, and by the end of the fall, he was at the top of his game. One might even go so far as to say he was perfect. In his last outing, he threw a no- hitter over six innings, and finished with a perfect record of 3-0. So it is safe to assume that his name will not only be penciled in to the starting rotation, but etched in stone. Well, not exactly. "They haven't set the rotation yet," he cautioned. "Whoever comes back in the best shape and whoever wants it the most will get to be a starter. "There are seven guys looking to get into a five-man rotation. And right now, anybody could step in and take one of the spots." This is only the third year of existence existence for the baseball program at Wayland Baptist. Already the program program is gaining recognition and respect. respect. Last year, one of the outfielders on the team was signed by the Florida Florida Marlins. There is plenty of opportunity to impress the scouts over the course of the spring schedule, which gets underway in February and lasts until mid-May. During that time, the team will play close to 60 games. That is a lot of baseball in a short period of time. But, with daily temperatures temperatures in Texas hovering around the 80-degrcc mark, every day is a perfect day to play baseball. "We have a very effective pitching pitching staff," said Tranter, who is in his sophomore year of eligibility at the school. "If our pitching staff holds up, we should make it into the playoffs." Tranter is hoping that he gets the opportunity to be the glue that holds the pitching staff together by being included in the starting rotation.
