Newcastle Optimist Novices Novices played another outstanding game this week against Baltimore Baltimore #3 on Wednesday, December December 13. The game started with exceptional exceptional play by the defence team of Emily Bradford and Lisa Organ, keeping Baltimore off the scoreboard. Hard work and digging in the comers proved rewarding for Jordan Bowen who scored our first goal, assisted by Mark Reid at 7:50 of the first period. Less than one minute later, Adrian Vasseur took a pass froth Geoffrey Geoffrey Frenetic to sneak another another one past the Baltimore goalie. The awesome goaltcnd- ing of Paul Shkordoff and defensive defensive abilities of Matthew Stacey and Jason Walton kept the puck available for the forwards, forwards, Desmond • Hannah, Chris Vanstonc and Joel Tate, who worked hard to help claim the victory. The second period saw end- to-end action with only one goal being scored by Mark Reid, who slipped the puck by Baltimore's goalie, assisted by Andrew Martin'at 5:45. The third period showed more action again with Dean Hannah and Chris Warnc playing playing another terrific game. Adrian Adrian Vasseur was again on a roll, picking up two goals in the third, one at 7:36, unassisted, and another at 2:04, assisted by Kayla Palmatccr. (Noteworthy: This gives Adrian 5 hat-tricks this year!) The Baltimore team never gave up and managed to squeeze one goal in with only 25 seconds left to play in the game. Final score 5-1. Our winning streak came to an abrupt halt on Monday, December December 18 when we played against Colbomc B. The first place Colbome team sent us home with a 5-1 loss. The Newcastle gang never gave up. Scoring our only goal late in the third period was Chris Van- stone from a terrific setup by Andrew Martin. Tournament. The first game saw the Newcastle squad meet Co- bourg IBEW. The first period was scoreless, with the Newcastle Newcastle net minder, Brendan Oldman, forced to make some huge saves. Brendan Oldman still was called upon to make some sprawling saves. The defense of Jacqui Vale, Amanda Vyfs- chafl, Kevin Ferguson, Kyle Anderson, and Malt Brash displayed displayed good effort to keep the score close. Newcastle got on the board with 3:22 left, on-a great shot by Craig Kelly, as sisted by linemates Alex Andringa Andringa and Gordon Vale after a wild scramble in front. In the second period, Cobourg Cobourg kept sustained pressure for over a minute, with Brendan Brendan making some acrobatic saves to keep the score close, even one off of his helmet. With two minutes left in the second, Newcastle failed to clear the zone and Cobourg scored to make it 3-1. Cobourg was really pumped. Newcastle responded, first with some awesome defensive moves by Kevin Ferguson, and then with an excellent pass from - Kyle Saari to Gordon Vale to Andrew Murphy, with Andrew scoring through the five hole to make it 3-2. Newcastle Newcastle seemed to come alive, controlling the puck and making making some super passing plays. But, Cobourg responded with a goal with four minutes left on a hard close-in shot, making the score 4-2. That's the way it ended. After the game, all players congratulated each other other and each received a trophy. One team member, Sean Price, couldn't be in the tournament, but the team looks forward to his speedy return. Coaches Chris Wright, Brian Gillan and Carl Vyfs- chaft were happy with their team's effort in the tournament. tournament. Great fun was had by all.
