The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, January 3,19% Dennis Pizzeria Settles For Split in Two Games Amidst all the hustle and bustle bustle of the holiday season, the Minor Novice Dennis Pizzeria Toros have managed to fit in a couple of games. December 16 had the boys hosting the Orillia team at the Darlington Sports Centre. The teams had not previously met this year, but had seen each other play in tournaments. Jordan Gross opened die scoring for the home team midway midway through the first period, assisted by Ian Garrison. Tyler Ferguson added a second Toros Toros marker at the beginning of the second period, followed up by an unassisted goal by Alex Henderson. Jordan Gross scored at the end of the second period on an assist from Kevin Smith to establish a solid 4-0 score. The Toros got their fifth goal from Gross at the beginning of the third period, assisted by Nieuwenhuis, but that didn't seem to put the contest to rest. Orillia gradually frittered away at the lead with three, third pe riod goals, but it was a ease of too little, loo late. The Toros left the game with a 5-3 victory, victory, and then headed up to Newmarket Newmarket the following day. The reception from the hometown hometown Newmarket team was less hospitable than the Toros would have liked. A tentative game in the first period by the Toros allowed the Newmarket squad to establish a 3-0 lead after after the period was over. The Toros regrouped in the second and had two quick goals late in the period to lighten lighten up the contest. Scoring for the Toros were Tyler Ferguson on an unassisted effort, and Ian Garrison, assisted by Jordan Gross. Numerous opportunities were had by both squads in the third period, but only the Newmarket Newmarket team was able to manage manage a score. The final was 4-2 for Newmarket, Newmarket, but the Toros certainly know they arc capable of winning winning against the Newmarket team. CROSS TRAINING CLUB - On Monday, January 15, the Canadian Cross Training Club will be presenting a seminar on "The Benefits of Cross Training." The keynote speaker on the evening will be Barrie Shcplcy, head coach of the Canadian National Triathlon team. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Whitby Recreation Complex. EAGLES OPEN 1996 -- The Bowmanvillc Eagles will play their first home game of the new year on Sunday night when they host the Ajax Axemen in a 7:30 p.m. game. Following Sunday's encounter, there arc only eight home dates remaining before the league playoffs begin in late February. DRAW WINNERS -- Congratulations to the five winners from the Eagle's Nest Trivia Contest that appeared in our paper through the month of December. Each winner receives six free tickets to any Eagles regular season home game. The winners are: Bud Oke, Scott Lane, John J. Moher, Barry Macklin, and Mike Whelan. Winners can pick up their tickets at the front office of The Statesman during regular business hours. As has been the custom for Claringlon athletes, 1995 was a year filled with countless individual individual success stories and leant championships. January •The Canadian Statesman selected selected Chris Van Mcyl of Newcastle, Newcastle, and Sarah Couch of Bowmanvillc, as male and female female Athletes'of the Year. •Former Osliawa General, Jason Jason McQuat, returned from the pro hockey ranks to sign with the Bowmanvillc Eagles. •Harness horse driver Dong Brown was voted Canada's Driver of the Year for an unprecedented unprecedented sixth time. February •The Newcastle Town League celebrated its 50th anniversary anniversary with a couple of alumni games. •Newcastle's Jim Shaw was presented with the Jim Vipond Award as Ontario's outstanding outstanding disabled athlete during ceremonies ceremonies at the Conn Smythc Celebrities Dinner. •It was announced that Claringlon Claringlon would be hosting a Youth Triathlon that would attract attract athletes from all across Ontario. •Toby Limebccr represented the local swim club at the Na tional Senior Swimming Championships held in Montreal. March •Conrticc Secondary School wrestler Mike Francis relumed home from the OFSAA championships championships with a gold medal in the 54 kilo division. •The Bowmanvillc Eagles celebrated their third consecutive consecutive Central League Championship Championship when they defeated the Port Perry MoJacks in four straight games. •James Edwards won a bronze medal in judo, while Sommer West won a gold medal in hockey, at the Canada Winter Games held in Grande Prairie, Alberta. •Noted baseball historian, Bill Humber, released his latest book entitled Diamonds Of The North: A Concise History Of Baseball In Canada. •Bowmanvillc resident Arnold Arnold Etcher was honored by the Osliawa Generals after he retired following 30 years of timekeeping hockey games. •The Bowmanvillc Eagles eliminated the Napanee Raiders Raiders in six games to advance to the Ontario semi-finals. April •In an exciting seven-game series, the Bowmanvillc Eagles eliminated the Mount Forest Patriots in the semi-finals, and will now face the Belle River Canadiens in the Ontario finals. finals. •The Bowmanvillc Toro Midgets Midgets won the bronze medal at the OHF 'AA' tournament they hosted, defeating Kitchener by a score of 5-3. May •Thc Belle River Canadiens won their second straight Ontario Ontario championship, sweeping the Bowmanvillc Eagles in four straight games. Belle River River won 20 straight games in the playoffs, sweeping all five of their opponents in the minimum minimum four games. •Nick Rupa improved his boxing record to 22-3-2 when the referee stopped his fight in the fifth round. The fight look place in Louisiana. •A total of 34 boys' and girls' teams took part in the 4th annual annual Canadian Statesman 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament. •Paul Murdoch relumed home from the Canadian Karate Karate Championships in British Columbia with a total of three medals. •Conrticc resident Margaret Climenhaga finished in the top 10% of all women entered in the Boston Marathon. Of the 250 women from Canada who Masters Swimming is Gaining in Popularity ATHLETES OF THE YEAR -- Because of the holiday schedule, we arc still in the midst of completing the engraving on our plaques to honor the 1995 Athletes of-the Year for Claringlon. Masters is an adult length swimming fitness program which has been popular in Canada and countries around the world for many years. Clar- inglon's version of the program program is run by coaches from the local swim team (Claring- ton Swim Club), but Masters is not just for the speedy. Although Masters workouts draw much from the training knowledge gained by competitive competitive swimmers, it is a program which can provide enjoyment and fitness benefits for almost anyone who can swim. "Masters is a wonderful program program for anyone who loves swimming and wants to keep or gel fit," says swim coach Michael Holbrook. Mr. Holbrook provides instruction instruction and coaching in the Masters workouts together with long time Masters instructor, instructor, Joan Santomcro, of Oshawa. "We have a nicely rounded group running now," says Holbrook, Holbrook, "and we're able to meet fitness needs for people with a pretty wide range of abilities. "We have swimmers who arc looking mostly to improve their technique. The requirements to join are simple. Swimmers should be 20 years of age or older (the most senior member of the group just celebrated her 71sl birthday). You must be able to swim the length of the pool comfortably, and you must be looking to leant a little something something new as well as to get a good workout. ' ' I think we do a good job of mixing stroke instruction with fitness work," explains coach Holbrook. "Joan and I usually run the workouts together, and we try to give everyone some personal attention each night." Masters registration has been so good this fall that two additional additional workouts have been added added for the winter. The workouts workouts will now run three nights per week: Monday, Thursday, and Friday, as well as early Wednesday morning for those who like an invigorating start to the day. Swimmers choose one, two or three workouts per week for a 12-week session. Intensity increases increases gradually over the weeks and varies from easy to quite challenging. The work is carefully tailored to each swimmer's level of fitness.
