The girls went carolling door to door for two nights in their neighbourhood in northeast Bowmanville. The Clarington Concert Band starts its fourth season Thursday, January 11th, 7:30 p.m. in the Orono Town Hall. Over the past three years, the Concert Band has held to its aims and objectives in providing providing a vehicle for the development development of musical talent, strengthening musical performance performance as a group and creating further cultural identity for the Municipality of Clarington. It has, as well, fostered a friendly community spirit by means of its musical activities within the community. The Courtice resident is the founder and president of The Courtice Helping Hands Food Bank. She raised five children on her own, and realizes just how difficult it can be for people people to make ends meets. "Her dream was to run a non-dcnominalional service for the needy, with no strings or politics," said food bank volunteer volunteer Gloria Dean. "She wanted to create a situation that not only helped people, but also made them feel comfortable." Dean first heard of Helping Hands while helping out at St. Vincent's Kitchen in Oshawa. A truck driver who took deliveries deliveries out to lies from the soup kitchen told Dean about the food bank. Dean took a trip out to Helping Hands with the driver one day, and has been a volunteer ever since. The Courtice Helping Hands Food Bank receives a lot of support from various churches in the region. "She receives help from many wonderful farmers who bring her vegetables and eggs," said Dean. "There are so many of them who arc willing to help a great lady with a great cause." Helping Hands assists a wide variety of families from Whitby through to Orpno and Port Perry. People are referred to lies by social services, Mother's Allowance and churches. People who receive assistance are given food hampers hampers once a month. The food bank is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 48-ycar-old single mother spends the rest of her week cleaning up and preparing preparing packages for the people who come to her food bank, lies makes sure each hamper has something to make a complete complete meal. If a hamper contains contains spaghetti, it will also contain contain sauce. Many of her volunteers also say she always has something on the stove, such as soup. The food bank also has clothes for the needy, but there is never enough at one lime, lies must keep a waiting list. Right now she is in search of a size 42 winter coat which is greatly needed. "What makes Sharon so special is that she never needs anything in return other than the smile on people's faces," said Dean. "She is happy Ire- cause she knows she will be helping and feeding the needy tomorrow. She is not a martyr, but she is the closest thing to an angel." Dean believes lies' genuine kindness is the reason why so many people believe in her and do what they can to back her up when they can. Although she lives on disability, lies is more than happy to use her own money to help those in need without complaint or need of recognition. According to Dean, one thing lies needs is more consistent consistent volunteers. Sometimes, people will make promises they can not keep. If promises arc not kept, lies will take it upon herself to make sure the job is done anyway. lies is a women who gives from the heart, and believes it is her grandmother who made her the person she is today. lies and her sister were raised by their grandmother in Toronto after their mother passed away. She believes the importance of helping the needy was instilled in her. It has always been her dream. "It's rare to find someone such as her in your community," community," Dean said.
