Schools and Students to Receive Report Card Beginning this June, every parent with a child attending school in The Northumbcrland- Clarington Board of Education will receive a portrait of that school's academic performance. performance. And that school's per formance will be compared to board and province-wide test results. "An important measure of a board's accountability is student student achievement," says Jan Pomeroy, co-ordinator of cur riculum. These packages, available available to parents and ratepayers, will show "how well students arc doing, and how well schools arc doing. They will be set in the context of specific information such as the demo graphies of that school community." community." Only a handful of school boards in the province arc working on some form of public public reporting, says Superintendent of Program Trudy Lum, who adds: "we're forecasting" that the province will soon require all school boards to do this. The school and board-wide profiles will publish the results of the most recent board-wide or province-wide tests in which students have participated. In the inaugural edition, elementary elementary schools will report their results on the recent province- wide grade six reading tests. High schools will show how their students performed in the grade nine reading and writing tests. "In their profiles, schools will detail what they intend to do to improve student achievement," achievement," says Lum. For example, Hastings Public School reports that their students were slightly below the board and provincial results in reading in the narrative narrative and non-fiction sections. But they were strong in other areas of reading. The school performed above average in arithmetic and problem-solving. problem-solving. As a result, teachers at the school decided, among 'other things, to beef up the non-fiction non-fiction reading program, teach students ways to read for specific specific information, conduct a Math Family Night at the school and, ask parents to encourage students to read more at home. In fact, linking what happens happens at home with what happens happens at school is another key part of the school profiles, says Lum. "It's one more mechanism mechanism of sharing, with parents, what a school values and what the school is working toward accomplishing." Pomeroy says the "focus of the school profiles is to improve school programs. Every school is expected to develop an action plan, no matter matter how well they have performed performed (on the tests)."
