The devotional devotional closed with prayer. Margaret introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Mary Sprout, a retired high school teacher who, as a busy homemaker homemaker and church worker, was very well qualified to talk about the topic 'What's ahead for the U.C.W?' Everyone listened intently as we heard of the exploding technology around the world, part of a phenomenal social change. Durham Briefs Safety Patrol Jamboree Durham Regional Police, in co-operation with the Kiwanis Club of Oshawa, will be hosting a Safety Patrol Jamboree on Wednesday, June 5th, at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. The Jamboree is an event where the police recognize all the student safety patrollers from across Durham Region. Awards of merit will be presented to deserving youngsters from each school and two special patrollers will receive bicycles for being "Patrollers of the Year'. The Awards ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m., following which, students will enjoy a dance with their fellow patrollers from across Durham. Late Mayor a Hall of Farrier Former Town of Newcastle Mayor, the late Garnet B. Rickard, will be one of seven outstanding Ontarians inducted inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in Milton next month. The induction ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m on June 16th, where the guest speaker will be Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Ken Knox. Garnet Rickard (1915 - 1994) was a seed grower in Durham Region, having started his business in 1934 with two bushels of oats won in a seed fair. His commitment to excellence led him to establish the first seed cleaning plant in Durham, winning pedigreed seed championships consis- tendy at major North American fairs. Rickard served as president of the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association in 1945, and president of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association 1961 - 1963. Active in community affairs, Garnet Rickard served as mayor of the Town of Newcastle, was Chairman of the area school board, and Warden of the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham. He was awarded the OAC Centennial Medal in 1974 and Order of Canada in 1984. The Recreation Complex in Bowmanvillc was named after Garnet Rickard. The Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame provides recognition recognition to those who have made significant contributions to the development of Ontario's agri-food industry. There arc 109 previous inductees in die Hall of Fame at the Ontario Agricultural Museum.
