12 The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, May 25, 1996 Electricity to one section of east Bowmanville was expected expected to be out for as long as eight hours, after a truck overturned and struck a hydro pole on King St. E., Thursday. The truck tipped while it was offloading crushed gravel for road reconstruction just cast of Liberty St. The power outage outage affected Bowmanville and Newcastle for almost two hours, beginning at noon on Thursday, May 23. Approximately 5,500 cusomers were affected. Their power supply resumed in about one and one-half hours. The area closest to the accident accident was in the dark longest. Power was not restored to nearby buildings until late Thursday afternoon and Thursday night. A police officer said the tmek driver was not injured, just shaken, after the mishap in front of the Vision Advantage Optical store. The police officer said the driver was unsure why the dump truck had fallen over, but surmised the vehicle could have been on a soft spot on the road, which gave out. The results were that most of Bowmanville's power was knocked out for more than one hour, with businesses, homes and Memorial Hospital Bowmanville remaining in the dark. Students attending Vincent Massey School were not impacted drastically by the outage, outage, says Vice-Principal Sandra Reisch. "Our junior grades are at a track and field meet at Bowmanville High School. Since the classrooms are still bright enough, the primary grade students are in their classrooms."
