Jr. Steer Riding is how. A Steer Rider uses a rope looped around his mount's middle. middle. It is a flat plait with a handhold similar to that of a duf- flebag. Unlike the Men's event, where one hand is used, in this event the rider can use both hands. The rider puts his gloved hands in the loop, knuckles down, and an aid in the chute pulls the slack from the rope. When the rider has confidence confidence in his position and " it feels right ", the rider takes the free end of the rope and lays it across his palm, tightening tightening his grasp on the rope. Hunching his body down close to his hand, he waits until he feels the steer standing square. He nods and the chute swings open. What comes next is the ride of anyone's life as the steer does his best to dismount his rider. In order to have a good ride, the contestant must stay on the steer eight ( 8 ) seconds. This event is open to all riders aged eight ( 8 ) to fifteen ( 15 ) years old. Safety is always a concern at Rodeo events, therefore helmets are worn at all times in this event.
