I 3 9 T H ONTARIO RODEO FINALS Page 11 Event #8 -- Saddle Bronc Riding Saddle bronc riding is considered rodeo's classic event. It is one of rodeo's original events, evolving from the days when ranch cowboys broke their own horses. Saddle bronc riding has less competition than any other event in professional rodeo. There's a reason; the instinctive reactions required to keep in the stirrups, sense what a horse will do next, and the rhythm required, because there is nothing nothing solid to hang onto, make this event one with no substitute substitute for years of experience. The duration of the ride is 8 seconds and as in bareback riding the cowboy will hang on with a single handhold, this time to a bucking rein. The rein is a round piece of braided rope about l l/2 inches in diameter and much of the success of the ride depends upon the length of rein the cowboy takes. If he takes too short a hold the horse is strong enough to pull him out of the saddle the first jump out of the chute. Saddle bronc riders move their feet alongside the horse from the front to rear (the higher and the farther forward the rid er's feet go the higher the marking). When the rider moves his feet alongside the horse he should keep his toes pointed out. When the horse's front feet hit the ground the rider's feet should be at the front of the horse. Scoring of the ride is done by two judges with the same l to 25 point spread for the horse and rider for a potential total total score of 100. That of course is impossible and any score over 50 is above average. The rider is downgraded by the judges if he loses control- cowboys call it "getting into a storm" - and if this happens the saddle makes recovery more difficult. The cantle of the saddle, behind, and the swells, in front, get under a man and literally knock him out of it. The possibility possibility of hanging up on a stirrup, always in the back of a rider's mind, is a great hazard to saddle bronc riding. We ask that You be with us at this rodeo and we pray that You will guide us in the arena of life. We don't ask for special favours. We don't ask to draw around a chute-fightin' horse, or to never break a harrier. Nor do we ask for all daylight runs or not to draw a steer that won't lay. Help us, Lord, to live our lives in such a manner that when we make that last inevitable ride to the country up there, where the grass grows lush, green and stirrup high, and water runs cool, clear and deep, that You, as our Last Judge, will tell us that our entry fees are paid.
