4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 25,1996 Section Two Cowboy Eludes Columnist I just missed an opportunity opportunity to meet Kennedy Haskell during this past weekend's Ontario Rodeo Finals held in Orono. Haskell, a Kitchener resident, resident, was competing in the bareback bronc event So what's the big deal about meeting this cowboy? Well, he is the cowboy in the picture that has become the signature photo of the rodeo rodeo in this area. In the photo, Kennedy has been bucked off a horse. His feet are pointing up in the air, and his head is suspended a couple of feet above the ground. "Oh, that guy," you might say. The picture, taken in 1994, This sketch of Statesman sports reporter, Brad Kelly, was done by local artist Rick Clark. An Olympic Thanks To: Municipality of Clarington, Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, French Immersion Class 810, Friends, family, and track and field fans. Thank-you for your support support during the Olympic Games. I am looking forward to your continued support in the year 2000. A special thanks to the Newtonville United Church and community for the recep tion, cards,'gifts, and flowers. The fax's, cards, and letters letters of encouragement I received received both before and during the Games were greatly appreciated. appreciated. I'm sure we'll have a bigger celebration in the year 2000. Thanks again Nicole Devonish EDITOR'S NOTE: We'll hold you to that promise. won Best Sports Photo in the Ontario Community Newspapers Newspapers Association annual competition. competition. It placed second among Canadian community newspapers in the same category category that year. The photo has been splashed across the newspapér, used in magazines, magazines, on posters and t-shirts, and may be painted by a local artist in the future. After getting a lot of mileage mileage from that single shot, I thought it was about time to meet the person responsible for all the publicity. The hunt began during the intermission of Saturday morning's show, when officials officials with the rodeo gave me a name to go with the photo. After a couple of inquiries, I wasn't able to find him. With the help of Cathy Collacott, of Cathy's Gold, who competed on this year's circuit in barrel racing, we began another search, which again come up empty. "The Kennedy free-fall," was how Blackstock cowboy Danny Steward referred to the photo when asked if he knew of Kennedy's whereabouts. whereabouts. As it turned out, Kennedy had left the rodeo to pay a visit to the Emergency Ward at the Bowmanville hospital. During his bareback bronc ride, he cracked his head on the protective railing and needed some stitches. When the show was over,, another attempt to locate him; came up empty, v It was with some hesitation hesitation that I pursued the meeting meeting anyway. Based on the publicity the photo has attracted, attracted, I've always wondered wondered if the cowboy in the picture would thank me, or strangle me. Perhaps it's to my advantage advantage that he is a rider, and not a roper. The situation has become similar to that guy who helicopters helicopters off the ski jumping ramp during the opening segment segment of ABC's Wide World of Sports. How do you think he feels about seeing that embarrassing embarrassing moment over and over again? Now you see my point. Apparently, Kennedy has taken some kidding from the rodeo fraternity. When he was shown the photo on the front of a t-shirt this year, he apparently just shrugged and said, "Oh no. Not again." I'm sure that I am just as anonymous to him as he is to me. When I do introduce myself myself next year, and tell him my name, it won't mean anything anything to him. But when I tell him I took the photo, I'm betting he'll say "Oh, that guy." Lots To Do - There seemed to be attractions for a wider age range at this year's rodeo than in past years. There were plenty of amusements amusements for young kids, and the r western mall was a busy spot, as shoppers parted with their money, or just browsed through the many exhibits. The amount of work that goes into putting on an event of that magnitude goes unnoticed. unnoticed. Once again the Rotary and Kinsmen Clubs were able to pull it off without a noticeable noticeable hitch. One beef, though. What's with full price adult admission admission for a two-year-old- to watch the rodeo? The theory that they are taking up a seat so they pay full price -- which was used at the ticket window - is absolutely ridiculous. ridiculous. And if the full price admission admission charge had my wife and I scratching our heads, I can only imagine what the mother with three kids under 10 standing behind us in line must have thought. WHO ME? - The caricature caricature of me used in today's paper "was sketched by local artist Rick Clark. Quipped one staffer, "You have a nicer nicer expression on your face than usual." Easy now. Sports Not Tuned Into AM Radio Dear Editor We are blue collar workers workers who work shiftwork. NHL and baseball broadcasting broadcasting have no respect for the blue collar workers who work shiftwork. If they did, they would use an FM sports broadcasting broadcasting station, not an AM. Why? Factories with machinery machinery or electric handguns handguns will not receive an AM station. Please, the millions of blue collar workers need an FM broadcasting sports station for us to listen to baseball and hockey while we work. Please help us. Move to an FM sports station.
