The almost 100 students started their first day at the centre on Wednesday Wednesday morning, Sept. 4. Durham College President Gary Polonsky hopes "someday this will become Ontario's newest university." Waverley P.S. Begins Another exciting year has started at Waverley School. The youngest members of our family, junior kindergarten students, students, have now settled in to begin their journey at Waverley. Waverley. The first meeting of the' School Council was held Tuesday, Tuesday, September 17, 1996. Some of the items discussed were the new volunteer,booklet, volunteer,booklet, the school plan for growth and the homework policy. The next meeting of the School Council is October 5,1996 at 7 p.m. in the Information Centre. The focus for this .meeting will, be computers in the classroom. Parents will gain hands-on experience experience with the programs used throughout the school. All parents are welcome to attend School Council meetings. At ,6:40 parents will meet, in the gym for a presentation presentation about the school homework policy. To begin with, here is a list of members of the, 1996-97 Student Council Executive: Prime Minister - Lisa Locatelli, Deputy Prime Minister - Martin Geary, Minister Minister of Finance - Mandi Pa- quin, Minister of Revenue - Clare Gatej-Whelton, Secretary - Stacey Lalonde, Minister of School Affairs - Elisha Ribei- ro, Minister of Sports - Kristy Burke, Minister of Communications Communications - Rachana Gupta and Keri Jones. This year we welcome a new addition to Student Council. Council. Each classroom has a sports representative who helps out with pep rallies, intermural games and other sporting events. The next few weeks will prove to be the busiest due to the organization of new classes, classes, sports teams, school trips, and activities to welcome the new school year. September 20 was the date of the Grade 9 Welcome Day and the first school dance. Grade 9 Welcome Day is a tra dition at St. Stephen's which involves Grade 9's dressing up and playing silly games to feel comfortable with all the new faces. After all the excitement throughout the day, the grande finale was the first school dance of this year. Hosted by Sights and Sounds, the dance raised money for the school and canned goods for a local foodbank. There were numerous numerous prizes given away such as CDs, T-shirts, watches and much m.ore. Another sports filled year has begun and St. Stephen's is ready to run, shoot and score their way to victory. The coaches have begun the boys' soccer tryouts while the girls' inter-collegiate basketball team is beginning to prepare for their opening season. We wish both teams die best of luck in their games and we know they will do a fine job in representing representing St. Stephen's. This past weekend, the annual annual Grade 12 Canoe trip to Algonquin Park turned out to be an adventurous excursion for everyone. The rain and wind storms continued as the students canoed across three lakes. Despite the weather, here is some positive feedback about the trip as reported by Anthony Scanga and Mike Cappello: "Setting up the tents and keeping the fire going was difficult, but the whole trip brought us closer together. Everybody had to help each other out or else we would never never have been able to accomplish accomplish all the things we did." The second group of Grade 12's are packing their bags for their trip on September 26. We'll keep you posted on future events taking place at St. Stephen's! The Atomic Energy Control Board is inviting comments with respect to the relicensing of the Darlington and Pickering Nuclear Generating Stations. Ontario Hydro has applied for renewal of the operating licences for both facilities whose current licences expire at the end of November and December respectively. The Board has given initial consideration to the applications, and is expected to make a final decision after its meeting on November 28, 1996, which is to be held in Oshawa. In reaching its decision, the Board will take into consideration any comments or concerns expressed by interested parties or the public.
