Vatcher, R.M.T. NEW PATIENTS WELCOME Hercules to the Rescue by Chris Rourke The Bowmanville Eagles have found a "mighty" man to fix their goaltending problems. problems. Last week, Eagles General Manager, Mike Laing, made a trade for a goaltender in the hopes that he will shore up the problem the team is having having between the pipes. Hercules Karasavvidis Laing traded former number number one goalie Joey Walters to the Ajax Axemen for their first-string goaltender, Hercules Hercules Karasavvidis. GM Laing said the trade was necessary because Waiters Waiters quit the team and the team couldn't go with a 16- year-old Brett Cooper as the number one goalie. During the summer, Laing tried to make this deal, but Ajax turned him down. But, as luck would have it, after Girls' Hockey News the team was trounced 11-6 in Peterborough last Tuesday, October 8, Ajax called and asked if he was still interested interested in making the trade. Laing said yes and the deal was completed in about five minutes. Laing thinks that Karasavvidis Karasavvidis is capable of being the number one goalie he's been looking for. "He brings solid goaltending goaltending and he's played with Ajax the last couple of seasons," Laing said. "They've been the worst team the last two years and he's faced 50-60 shots a game." Karasavvidis said he wasn't surprised the trade happened because he asked them to trade him to a contender. contender. "I see this as a new beginning, beginning, because I was struggling struggling a bit in Ajax (prior to the trade). But I feel with a better team like this it will help me out," the new Eagle goalie said. Laing said he tried to ship Walters to every team in the Western Conference, along with Orillia, but they all turned him down. "Ajax will be good for Joey because their GM and coach, Bill Bowden, has coached Joey before and he knows the family," Laing stated. Walters had been struggling struggling this season as the team's goals-against-average is over seven. He told Laing that he had no interest in coming back to the Eagles this year, but Laing convinced him to return. Walters told Laing that the travel from the west end of Toronto to Bowmanville was beginning to take its toll on him. With the Eagles' poor state of goal tending, Karasavvidis doesn't feel like he has to be a savior for the hockey club. "I'm just going to go out and play my best, because once I start putting pressure on myself is when I'll start to fight the puck," the soon-to- be 18-year-old said. Karasavvidis arrived in time to meet his new coaches and teammates last Thursday, October 10, at practice. The Bowmanville Eagles swung a deal with the Ajax Axemen involving the team's top goaltenders. Landing in Bowmanville is Hercules Karasavvidis, who picked up his first win for his new club on Sunday night against Orillia. The 18-year-old has two year's of experience at the Provincial Jr. A level. \ K. McPherson Optometrist Novice, on Saturday,' October 12, the girls played against White Rose at Harman Park in Oshawa. Although we lost (6-0), our goalie for the day, Laura Stacey, made an amazing amazing 24 saves! On October 17, we hosted the Oshawa Triple AAA Photography Photography team in Newcastle. With three new players to complete complete our team we played our best game yet. Our defense of Simone Frenette, Ashley Weir, Natasha Petrovic, and Candace Allen worked hard to try to keep the more aggressive Oshawa team from scoring. With a couple of practices before their next game on October October 26, in Harman Park at 6:00 p.m., the girls are looking forward to the rematch against Oshawa News Team. 7-11 Peewee team played against Oshawa's Baker team only to be defeated. Although the girls tried their hardest, the Oshawa goalie was not to be denied her much deserved shutout. The 7-11 team will be on the ice again on October 24, 7:00 p.m. in Newcastle. The Grant Physiotherapy Bantam/Midget team was on the ice on October 15 against Quon T.V. with a 1-1 score. Grant's only goal coming from Emily Muir with an assist to Brooke Pakosta.
