Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 23, 1996 7 St. Stephen's Teacher Moonlights as Coach by Chris Rourke How tough would it be to combine a teaching career with a coaching career? Just ask Rod McGillis. He's a teacher in the history, religion, and business departments departments at St. Stephen's Catholic Catholic School, as well as being the assistant coach with the Pickering Panthers of the Metro Metro Jr. A Hockey League. McGillis,' who spent the last two seasons as an assistant assistant with the Lindsay Muskies of the OHA Provincial Jr. A League, felt it was time to move on. "I lived-and-breathed the Lindsay Muskies the last two years, but this summer Roger Neilson (assistant coach with the NHL's St. Louis Blues) bought the team and brought in his own coaches," McGillis McGillis told The Statesman during a lunch-hour interview at St. Stephen's. 'The experiences I've helped me in hockey." After Neilson bought the Muskies, McGillis wasn't asked back, so he went looking looking around for a new coaching coaching position. During the off-season, the Cobourg Cougars of the OHA Provincial Jr A League offered him the job of General General Manager and coach, but he couldn't commit that much time. "I put my name in for coach and recommended a name that I'd work with as GM, but they went with Mark Watson (former Eagles coach), who could commit to doing both," he said. After that he wasn't sure where he was going to end up. But while visiting his friend Brian Drumm at the OHL's Peterborough Petes training camp this year, it was then that McGillis got a job. Drumm (Petes head coach) introduced him to John Blackburn (Pickering Panthers head coach) and Blackburn offered him the assistant assistant coaching position that day. Blackburn liked McGillis' experience, which includes a two-year stint with the Muskies, Muskies, as well, as the last two years as St. Stephen's hockey coach. Hockey isn't the only sport that McGillis coaches. He coached the senior girls' soccer soccer team at St. Stephen's last year, which he will do again this spring. When he was at Pcreyma for two years (1992-93, and 1993-94), he coached field lacrosse lacrosse for both years and senior senior boys' basketball for the first year, as well as the hockey hockey team. "Teaching and coaching arc inlcr-rclatcd," he stated. "The experiences I've gained from coaching high school sports has helped me a lot in hockey." McGillis, who lives in Peterborough, Peterborough, received his Masters Masters of Science in Education from Niagara University (Niagara (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) in 1992. While he is proud of his education, McGillis has distinct distinct goals for his hockey career. career. He wants to become a head coach in either the Metro Metro or Provincial Jr A League, then become an assistant in the OHL, then a head coach. McGillis' big break came in 1981 when he received a four-year academic and athletic athletic scholarship to Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He excelled as an athlete at Colby. He received a four- year letterman in NCAA varsity varsity hockey, as well as a three-year letterman in NCAA varsity field lacrosse. After completing his four years at Colby College, he played for the Kalamazoo Wings and the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the International International Hockey League in 1985. McGillis said he is very loyal to the Pickering Panthers Panthers organization, but with only signing a one-year contract, contract, he's free to go at season's season's end. He lists his dream job as Drumm's assistant with the Petes, but one job that in-, trigues him is the Bowmanville Bowmanville Eagles. "They have a great tradition tradition of winning.
