Besides completing her physiotherapy course this month, the 23-year-old University University of Toronto student, whose parents live in Kendal, Kendal, was part of the Canadian Canadian Inter-University Athletic Union (CIAU)-champion varsity field hockey team. The tournament was held in Victoria, B.C., Nov. 1-3. Dana Mm led the M to the mile Not only was Anderson a participant, but she was named to the First Team, All-Canadian, and was co- winner of Player of the Year honors. As well, she was named CIAU tournament tournament MVP, and Player of the Game in both the semifinal semifinal and final matches. Considering that in the final 4-2 victory over the Univer sity of Victoria, Anderson scored three goals, none of this is surprising. Anderson says bringing home so much hardware was exactly what she hoped to do this year. "I wanted to go out with a bang," says Anderson, who has played her final game with U of T. "I was ecstatic to win, and to get individual awards as well was the icing on the cake." Graduation doesn't mark the end of Anderson's field hockey career. She will join the Canadian National Senior Senior team in B.C. in February to train for next August's World Cup qualifying tournament, tournament, the first step toward toward Olympic qualifying. "My goal is to be in the Olympics," the O'Neill Collegiate Collegiate graduate says. "We have to keep going for another another four years, for the year 2000 in Sydney, Australia." Australia." Anderson says she "can't imagine going to university without playing varsity." Because the physiotherapy faculty was "very considerate" considerate" to the needs of a varsity athlete, she says she was able to "stretch a four-year degree into five-and-a-half years." She will convocate later this month. Anderson says keeping up with school work, sports and a social life has simply been a matter of "time management." management." On Saturday, October 26, Mathews and Associates played their first league game against Colbome #1. Colbome pulled ahead early in the game, capturing a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period. period. With only 2:16 left to play in the second, Rudy Rickard scored our first goal of the evening, unassisted. Michael Michael Candiano came on strong in the third scoring a fabulous goal, assisted by Emily Bradford Bradford and Rudy Rickard. Andrew Andrew Martin found the net just minutes later off a pass from Kayla Palmateer. The Newcastle Newcastle gang kept the pressure on, but could not get that puck past Colbome's strong defence and goal tender. Final score 4-3. Our first road trip of the year found us in Grafton on Friday, November 1. Grafton took the lead at 8:53 of the first. Thirty seconds later, Alex Andringa tied th game with his first goal of the year, assisted by Andrew Martin. Grafton won the face- off and scored again at 6:53. Rudy Rickard made an excellent excellent pass to Kayla Palmateer who found the net at 1:31. Matthew Lee than scored an unassisted goal at :47 to close the period with Newcastle ahead 3-2. Newcastle then took control of the second period. The 2-1 victory completed an undefeated season, and marked the fourth year in a row that the school has won the championship. Absent was Pauly Johnson. Johnson. Coffee Time Off to Good Start The first league game for Newcastle Coffee Time Novices Novices put us up against Colbome #2. This very young Novice team showed them what they were made of when they came up with a 6-0 victory, with each goal being scored by a different different player. These goals were credited to Jan Berard; Joel Tate; Jessica Holmes, assisted by Jan Berard; Leanne Garisto, assisted by Marcel Vasseur; and Rikki Palmateer, assisted by Krystal Lee and Matthew Stacey. The second game was played against #3. Our Coffee Time gang took the lead in the first period on an unassisted goal by Rikki Palmateer. During the second period Kendall Boyd scored on a great pass from Jessica Holmes to put us ahead 2-0. Karen Wiltshire of Newcastle #3 scored with 6:14 left to play, but that was the final goal of the day giving Coffee Time their second victory, 2-1. Game number three was a real nail biter and Coffee Time's first loss of the season. Jesse Wood of Newcastle #1 scored the only goal of the day with just 1:53 left to play in the game. Our final game this week was Coffee Time's first road trip of the year putting us up against Baltimore #3. We were first on the score- board with a goal scored by Matthew Stacey, assisted by Joel Tate and Rikki Palmateer. Baltimore came on strong in the third scoring twice to put them ahead 2-1. Not to be outdone, outdone, Grant Marcotte tied the game at two with his first goal of the year, assisted by Jan Berard and Jessica Holmes. With 25 seconds left in, the game, Rikki Palmateer put the puck in the top right comer off of a great pass from Matt Stacey Stacey and Krystal Lee. Final score 3-2. Also playing terrific were Josh Iwanczyk on defence and Adam Norton and Kyle Merk- ley on forward. Mitchell Bacon played incredible in net during all four games.
