6 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowman ville, Saturday, November 16, 1996 X: : Kinsmen Bantams Extend Streak BHS Rallies to Beat Paul Dwyer The Bowmanville High School Midget girls' basketball basketball team hosted Paul Dwyer in a recent LOSSA league game. After building an early lead, BHS let Paul Dwyer come back and take a lead in the fourth quarter. But a 12-4 run in the final three minutes gave BHS a 43-37 victory. In the above photo, Jackie Clements (#3), of BHS, cuts off the path to the basket as a Paul Dwyer player attempts to score. The Kinsmen Minor Bantam Toros continued to show their improvement as a team when the Newmarket Redman provided provided the opposition on November November 6 in what turned out to be a feisty affair. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period the rest of the night belonged to the Toros. Good goaltending by Brian Harris, good defence and excellent excellent penalty killing proved to be too much for Newmarket. The Toros scored three in the second, including a shorthanded shorthanded effort, and added three more in the third to claim a 6-1 victory. victory. The sharpshooters for Kinsmen were Nick Smith with three goals, Sean Pudlis (lg, la), Kyle Welsh (lg, la), Jon Black (2a), Chris Laton (lg), Adam Smith (2a)j Ian Gleeson, Mike Cyr, Dan Turcotte Turcotte and Brandon Baker added an assist each. On Saturday, November 9, the Kinsmen travelled to Pick ering in an attempt to continue their unbeaten streak which stood at five. Pickering opened the scoring and held the lead until late in the first period when Brandon Baker scored on a setup from Nick Smith and Jon Black to tie the game at 1-1. Pickering regained the lead early in the second and it looked like the lead would carry into the third as the Toros couldn't capitalize on some golden opportunities. But with 4:55 remaining in the period, Nick Smith took a pass from Sean Pudlis in the Pickering Pickering zone, made a nice move around the defence, froze the goalie and fed a beautiful pass to Kyle Welch who slapped the puck into the open net to tie the game at 2-2. Before the end of the period the Toros captured captured the lead on a nice individual individual effort by Daryl Stock- man, who scored on a breakaway to give the Toros a 3-2 lead. The third period started with the Pickering squad determined- determined- as they outshot the Toros Toros early but the goaltending of Rob Weir preserved the Toros lead. The home squad solved Weir with 5 1/2 minutes remaining remaining in the game to tie the score at 3-3, but the relentless Toros came right back on a goal by Kyle Welsh from a goalmouth scramble with as sists going to Sèan Pudlis and Dan Turcotte. Toros goalie Rob Weir saved his teammates on a couple of occasions with brilliant saves after giveaways in their own end. The Kinsmen cemented the win with a goal by Ian Gleeson assisted by Daryl Daryl Stockman to make the final score Toros 5, Pickering 3. The Toros are 5-0-1 in their last six games.
