Grant r.p.t. Are Your Orthotics Doing Their Job? Question: Telma how can I tell if my orthotics are doing their job? The job of an orthotic is to redistribute the weight through the foot in a more biomechani- cally sound manner; in a way that minimizes the strain to the feet and to the rest of the body. There are tests we run in clinic to see if orthotics are performing performing their job. People get orthotics for various reasons. For some people it is because they have sore feet, for others because they have sore knees, and for others because they have sore backs. Orthotics help these conditions by helping the person walk in a more supportive, supportive, better aligned manner, so they are less apt to strain the tissues of their feet, knees, and back. In clinic, there are two things we are looking for when we test an orthotic, whether it is a new pair of orthotics that the patient has just received from us, or whether it is an old pair that they are bringing in for testing to see if they require upgrading: I. Are the orthotics alleviating alleviating the client's condition; and, II. Are they doing their job of redistributing the weight in a more supportive manner. For the second aspect we do balance testing. With the client's client's orthotics off we ask him to stand on one foot and then on the other and compare the steadiness of both feet. With everyone you will find that one foot is less steady than the other. other. We then have the client put the orthotics on and repeat the balance tests to see if his stability has improved. Balance is a critical test when fitting orthotics because by realigning the foot, leg, and hip we will see improved balance balance overall. That is what we are looking for from an orthotic. An additional factor is flexibility. flexibility. A good flexibility test especially for patients with back pain is to have them bend over and touch their toes with the orthotics off and also to bend sideways to the right and then to the left. We then compare these three movements with the orthotics on. If the orthotics are doing, their job properly, we find that by supporting the feet and giving a better foundation flexibility improves a little bit. If the client is less flexible with'the orthotics on, this indicates indicates that the orthotics are over correcting and causing tension in the foot, knee, and back muscles. When I see this in clients clients I advise them to consider upgrading their orthotics. Grant Physiotherapy offers a free, computerized gait analysis.
