Editorial Cut Changed Story Dear Mr. Kelly My husband is a coach in the CRHL and we have been writing writing the articles for our hockey teams for the last three years. I would first like to thank you and your staff for submitting these articles, and also for the coverage you give local and school sports. After moving here from Scarborough, Scarborough, we really appreciate the dedication our local paper shows to teams our children and their friends play on. It's such a thrill for us to read about them, and it gives the kids a boost to see their name in the paper. We submit articles articles for all our games (good or bad), for our hockey team every every year, then make a scrapbook of them to give each member of the team to save. We couldn't do that without your help, and thank you for that. Now for the BUT. I realize you have to shorten articles sometimes due to space restric- , tion and understand completely. completely. We submitted an article, which appeared in the Claring- tort Independent on Nov. 30/96 under the headline "Aamco Bantams Win 'A' Title in Fifth Overtime in Grafton." You changed the ending we had written. We wrote: "Every player gave his all and great team work, a lot of heart" and the stunning goaltending of Rob Kameka brought home the 'A' championship. Congratulations Aamco." You changed it to read "The goaltending of Rob Kameka brought home the 'A' championship." I'm sure it just didn't occur to you the effect this could have on the team. There are 15 players on this team who all worked their hearts out to earn that 'A' championship. Many, if not all of them are aware that their coach submits these articles articles to the paper, but they don't realize that sometimes the wording is changed to fit the allotted space. I just want you to realize that there are now 14 players on the Aamco team who think their coach believes a goalie can win a tournament for them. Rob definitely helped a great deal, but hockey is a team sport and that is something their coach has always stressed to every player he has ever had. As sports editor, I would just like you to realize that when you cut out parts of an article, you should take a little more care with what you leave in.
