14 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, December 11, 1996 Section Two by Kelly Donohue Students at Bowmanville High School are breathing a sign of relief as the November Evaluation Days come to an end. Even after having finished these evaluations students are still left wondering what the purpose of them was. An interview interview with Mr. Hubbard, the principal at B.H.S., explains evaluation days more clearly. Top Achiever Christine Uy Congratulations Chris on your many achievements in high school. We are very proud ofyou! Love Dad, Mom and Michelle. Michelle. to Walter Woolley on December 15th! r Merry Christmas Irene and Happy 91st Birthday last Sept. 14 HI From all your family. M Lor Ay Lordy This Nurse is 40!! ;:%s from Dad, Cathy, Sandra, Glenn, Trevor and Travis with Love * In June of 1994 a survey re garding exams was given to parents, students, and teachers. From that survey there were three main concerns expressed, especially from the parents. The first was that exams are extremely valuable as a method method of assessment of a student's education. The second was that many students not enrolled in advanced level courses, do not spend enough time studying. The last concern was that there are a number of days during exam time that students are not writing an exam. The conclusion was reached that there needed to be a change in approach in the assessment/evaluation assessment/evaluation area. As a result, a new tool was created called Authentic Assessment. Authentic Assessment is a performance-based performance-based assessment in which students demonstrate skills that have been acquired in class. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate techniques techniques and strategies that are difficult to express with pen and paper. These assessments created an opportunity for teachers to assess students in many ways. Teachers worked together to find a variety of activities activities for students. Such activities activities included: debating in OAC English classes, a field trip to the Goodyear Plant in OAC Economics classes, lab experiments, mind mapping, and group activities of what the students have learned dur ing the past two and a half months. Therefore, they did not require a lot of study and preparation time, so classes continued during this time. But, at the same lime, a regular 70-minute class was not enough time to properly evaluate evaluate each student in the class. So, each evaluation was two periods combined, or half a day. As a result, teachers had the opportunity to assign tasks that could not have been done in a regular 70-minute class. Authentic Assessment Evaluation Evaluation Days was a pilot project this year. The results from these days will be evaluated and there will be a discussion To page 15 Clarke Students Busy With Christmas Plans The holiday season is upon us, and the spirit of that season has infected the halls of Clarke High School.
