Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Monday, December 23, 1996 19 Christmas Mouse Christmas Light Tour Enjoyed by Seniors About 45 senior citizens enjoyed Sunday's Christmas Light Tour hosted by the Bowmanville Kinsmen and Kinettes. After admiring the many excellent displays of Christmas lights, the seniors returned to Trinity United Church for refreshments. Pictured Pictured above are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cuddahee, along with Wayne Hodge (left) of the Bowmanville Kinsmen; Kylie Peltier, a Cadet from the Girl Guides and Lee Cook, of the Kinette Club. The Gift of Love I walked into a department store, To shop and browse around, I looked at this and looked at that, There were bargains to be found, I walked over to the wrapping wrapping counter, And saw the nicest things, There were ribbons, bows and paper, Also tinsel, seals and string. I stood there with amazement, amazement, And gazed at all so fair, The colors they were brilliant, brilliant, , All I could do was stare. A gift can be so costly, It can also be so small, You can wrap it up so pretty, After shopping in the mall. A package all wrapped nice ly, The contents to us unknown, Is like our bodies all dressed up, But our hearts are as hard as stone. The outside should not matter, matter, We should be good within, It's not our outer appearance, We can look good, yet live in sin. Three Christmas is a baby child Bom meek and mild, Bom in a lowly manger Because there was no room for the little stranger. Christmas is Santa with toys For good girls and boys, Walking dolls and hockey games For children with many names. Our bodies should be a special special gift, If transparent, our insides should glow, We should live on the outside as within, And to the world our radiance radiance show. Written by Olga Kozub March 29,1971. Christmas is also for the poor Whom we should welcome with an open door, So people will weep fewer tears. We found no trace of any creature. creature. Of course, the attic was easy to search because it was empty. We have a habit of not storing anything in the attic anyway just because of a fear of a fire. We live in an area that gets very hot in the summer summer and a lot of heat collects in the attic. Better to be safe than sorry is our motto. Now, since we'Ve made progress in solving our mysterious mysterious noise, or at least we've identified the origin of the sounds we feel a little more comfortable with the strange goings on. It must be some sort of small animal, a bird or mouse perhaps, trapped between between the floor boards of the house. We deduce that the animal animal is, in all probability, a mouse. We arrived at this conclusion conclusion because we have a soybean soybean field behind our house. No doubt, after the harvest, the little creature, ran into the house to keep warm. It then must have become trapped under under the attic floorboards. Its only entertainment must be to run around the fans, whenever it gets bored. It most likely stays there safe from our family family cat, content to run the fans similar to the little pet mouse running in a wheel. I grab a roll of duct tape and carefully put tape over all the electric fan switches next to the light switches. I want to ensure ensure that none of our fans can be turned on until I find a way to remove our holiday visitor. I hear gumdrops are a favorite of mice, maybe I should bait a live trap. As Christmas Day nears, I have decided to buy a large family gift. This year, we have a bit more money for this celebration, celebration, and I want to buy the family a stereo system. It won't be top of the line, but it will deliver beautiful sounds to our minds and hearts and ears. It's decided then, a stereo system system it is. I will go out now, while prices are reduced and purchase it for my beautiful little little family. After much bargaining, I have a beauty of a sound system. system. I know it will be enjoyed for a long, long time to come. Now, where to hide it? I mle out the attic immediately due to the unidentified noise. I do not want to take any chances of it being chewed or a nest of some sort made in a component. component. I guess the best place is in the garage. It will stay dry and warm and safe. Feeling very good about my surprise, I'm not prepared for what happens next. Billy runs into the kitchen and shouts excitedly excitedly for me to follow him into the garage. Mom, Mom, look, look what the Christmas Mouse did! He gave us a stereo system! All I could say was, "Isn't that nice." Soon, I begin getting phone calls from my neighbours. "What on earth is a Christmas Mouse?" they ask me. "Well," I begin, "If a child is especially good, all through the year, the Christmas Mouse will come before Christmas. But, I stress, "The child must be very, very, very good!" J.
