Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Monday, December 23, 1996 23 Santa Made it Through War How would Santa make it through the anti-aircraft barrage barrage and the fighter and bomber bomber planes? This was the thought uppermost uppermost in my mind in London, England, as Christmas 1942 approached. I was seven years old and the family was to gather gather in the remnants of our home which had been badly bomb- damaged but patched up enough for us to use a few rooms. Mum had worked wonders with the Ration books and it looked like we would have some treats. But, what about Santa? Well, he arrived in the shape of my cousin, Petty Officer Officer Joe Stacey, who came home on leave a week before Christmas Eve and brought me a wondrous gift, a banana. Oh, I had seen many pictures of the magical fruit and Mum had explained how you peeled it before you ate it and all the while I thought it sinful that monkeys were privileged to eat them. Now I actually held the "living thing" in my hand! I took it to school of course, and class by class, everyone was paraded into the Assembly Hall to view my treasure, whilst I beamed from ear to ear. I can't remember if Santa made it to my house that year but, as I walked home that day clutching my precious treasure, I was filled with the glow of Christmas and the wonder of the season. I knew then that, had I been present in the stable that day at the birth of our Saviour, Saviour, the gifts to Him would have been Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh and my Banana. Doreen Carpenter Newcastle. Christmas Poem This poem was written by my father My baby is a woman now, With Jesus by her side, And oh the glory in her heart That a bushel cannot hide. So full of life and happiness With worldly joys unknown For her soul has fled to Jesus And to Heaven she is going. And oh, this glad Remembrance Remembrance Day, In a manger Jesus Christ did lay, We humbly bow our hearts in prayer To Jesus on His Throne up there. And you, my darling, I am glad, Your heart is happy and not sad, And in the future, God grant to thee, A pearl beyond price, you will be. And I am glad to be your Dad And humbly at His Throne I pray, For one sweet darling girl like you, And thank Him on this Christmas Day. Dad. Fred Crosby. Mrs. June Sutherland Tree Brightens Living Room On Friday the 6th, I put my Christmas tree up. I like my Christmas tree. I put the Christmas Christmas tree in the house. I put bulbs and an angel on the top. The bulbs are big and the Christmas tree is big too. We put our Christmas tree in the livingroom. Our livingroom is big. This the best time of the year.
